The first folding iPhone reportedly will utilize Apple’s in-house C2 modem, switch to an advanced display technology to improve touch accuracy and make the screen crease less visible, and bring back a classic feature: Touch ID.
Codenamed V68, the book-style foldable is on track to debut in 2026
Foldable iPhone to feature Touch ID and Apple’s C2 modem
By this point, all major smartphone companies aside from Apple have launched multiple foldables. Samsung made great strides with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 this year, making it thinner than most slab smartphones.
However, multiple reports point to Apple joining the foldable space in 2026. The company is already working on its book-style foldable, and plans to launch it in September 2026.
Due to space constraints, the device will supposedly use Touch ID instead of Face ID. The device also will lack a SIM card slot. And it will apparently feature four cameras: one on the front, one on the inside and two on the back, says Mark Gurman in his latest Power On edition newsletter.
The company will seemingly launch the foldable iPhone in black and white colors. (Obviously, Apple’s plans could change, but that’s the roadmap for now.)
Gurman also the foldable iPhone will use Apple’s C2 modem, the rumored successor to the power-efficient C1 modem. This second-gen baseband modem will be designed to better compete with Qualcomm’s offerings. Apple supposedly will use the same modem on the iPhone 18 Pro lineup as well.
A less visible crease
Given that folding phones are all about their folding screens, Apple plans to use a cutting-edge panel — a switch it made only recently. The previous implementation used on-cell touch sensors that created a visible air gap between the display and the cover glass.
Instead, Apple reportedly will switch to an in-cell touchscreen — the same technology it uses on the iPhone — to tackle this problem. That should make the crease less pronounced while also improving improve touch accuracy.
