Cult of Mac‘s setups coverage loves to look at premium products, but we often emphasize value with thrifty-but-reliable gear. Today we marvel, however, at just how much one desk lamp can cost. Our MacBook Pro user places a $650 Dyson Solarcycle Morph Desk Light on a very nice Vari sit-stand desk.
Do people really pay that much for a lamp? Even our user claims it was a gift, not a purchase.

Vari sit-stand desk supports crazy-expensive desk lamp in MacBook Pro setup
Redditor rrogersca (“Rogers”) showcased the handsome and somewhat-pricey setup in a post entitled, “New M3 MacBook Pro 16.”
Recently Rogers added a new 16-inch M3 Pro MacBook Pro loaded with 36GB unified memory and a 1TB SSD for storage. And the powerful laptop connects to a wonderful array of peripherals through a Razer Thunderbolt 4 docking station. For example, the rig drives a 34-inch BenQ PD3420Q Ultrawide Monitor with a BenQ Screenbar Monitor Light on top.
In past days we covered the laptop and dock, the Keychron Q2 mechanical keyboard, the BenQ monitor and Oakwyood dual-monitor stand, and the setup’s killer audio. And now we round things off by looking at an excellent standing desk and a crazy-expensive desk lamp.
“Why did you buy the Dyson lamp?” a commenter asked. “What made it [worth] $500 to you?” Actually, right now it’s priced at $650 on Amazon.
“It was a gift,” Rogers replied. “I don’t think I would spend $650 on any lamp myself.” Hey, us either. But clearly somebody does.

So what does make a desk lamp worth hundreds of dollars? Nothing, most people might reply. But Dyson products aren’t cheap as a general rule, and this premium light self-adjusts throughout the day. It sports a lot of functionality, as the company describes below.
- Intelligent lighting in multiple formats. Adapts and transforms with your day.
- Multiple lights in one: Task, Indirect, Feature and Ambient.
- Intelligently tracks local daylight. Automatically adjusts brightness and color temperature so you get the right light for the right time of day, anywhere in your home.
- Designed to improve visibility and help reduce eyestrain. Powerful, high-quality light with glare control and low optical flicker.
- Personalize your light for your time of day, age, and task with the MyDyson app.
- Heat Pipe technology efficiently cools the LEDs, giving you light quality that lasts 60 years.
- 3-Point Revolve Motion allows the light to rotate at three separate points — the stem, elbow, and head — allowing you to precisely direct light wherever you need it.
- With magnetic touch-glide docking, the optical head seals to the stem to create a comforting orange glow.
- Motion sensor switches light on when you’re near, and off when you’re away for 5 minutes to conserve energy.
- Energy Star Certified.
