To fly a drone, it can’t be too windy. But a windmill looks its best when wind is spinning its sails.
So the filmmakers at Voormedia in the Netherlands had to be patient for a perfect, cooperative wind — and they were rewarded on a recent sunny afternoon, filming the beautiful windmills near the Zaanse schans from the DJI Inspire drone.
Voormedia is a multimedia company in Amsterdam that provides a range of services, from web development to online marketing. But the company also loves to show off the countryside in YouTube videos.
Last month, Cult of Mac featured Voormedia’s drone film of fields of blooming flowers in Keukenhof or Noordwijkerhout, with vibrant rows of pinks and purples that seemed never-ending.
Windmills are an obvious follow-up. The structures are iconic to the Netherlands, maybe more so than tulips and wooden shoes, and have served great industrial purposes in Dutch history, especially for the grinding of grain for the Dutch gin predecessor knowns as jenever.
“It was a really windy day, close to the limits of the drone,” video producer Bouke van Veen told Cult of Mac. “But a lot of wind also means perfect spinning windmills. Filming videos like this makes me love the Netherlands even more.”
Dignified and majestic, the windmills rise up from the flat land and seem to turn and bow for the camera. There are more than 1,000 windmills in the Netherlands.
