The iPhone is a distracting gadget. There’s texting, Facebook and a dozen-odd games I keep on the thing. I’m constantly being notified that there is something new to look at, a new Instagram post, a new Twitter reply, a new email.
Sometimes I just want to get away from it all, but I keep my iPhone with me all the time because, essentially, it makes sure I’m able to make a phone call in an emergency.
Now there’s a new Kickstarter project that aims to let you leave your iPhone at home but still remain connected with the one essential function: phone calls. The Light Phone is “a credit card-sized cell phone designed to be used as little as possible. The Light Phone is your phone away from phone.”
That sounds pretty neat, actually. Too bad I hate making phone calls.
In essence, the Light Phone acts as a call-forwarding service. Just connect it to your iPhone and then leave the house. Slide it into your wallet, your purse, your pocket and just forget it.
If someone calls you on your regular phone number, your iPhone will forward the call to the Light Phone. It’s that simple. There’s even a little display at the top so you can see what time it is (no Apple Watch integration, obviously), and see what numbers you’re punching in if you’re making a call.
The Light Phone project has another 39 days to go toward its funding goal of $200,000 (there’s currently almost $84,000 pledged). You can pitch in $25 to get a shirt and art book documenting the progress and process of making the Light Phone, or drop $100 to get those plus an actual Light Phone.
It’s the ultimate disconnect, letting you leave that iPhone 6 Plus home yet still letting the important things come through. Sure, you’ll miss your texts — which have become even more common than phone calls, these days — but isn’t that kind of a blessing?

These credit card sized phones are already widely available on Alibaba and have been for a couple years. Along comes a Kickstarter project and the requisite media campaign (Thank you Cult of Mac) and all of a sudden it’s a community supported product… That already exists.
