So how much will your performance suffer if you upgrade from iOS 9.2 to iOS 9.3 Beta 1? Not too much, as long as you’re on an iPhone 6.
As you can see, an iPhone 6 running iOS 9.2 is barely faster than an iPhone 6 running iOS 9.3:
Things get slower, though, when you upgrade to iOS 9.3 beta 1 on an iPhone 5s:
It’s even worse on an iPhone 5:
And god help you if you’re still on an iPhone 4s:
Worth keeping in mind is that performance tends to improve during beta releases, so these slowdowns are likely to decrease. Either way, though, one thing will likely be true regardless: the newer your device, the less iOS 9.3 will effect your performance.

Comparing Apples with …?
I have a 6 and noticed a steep battery drain. Not sure if it is due to the update playing with my settings or not. Ended up turning off Keychain (which I find useless anyway). That has helped, but still eats up juice faster than 9.2
Do you now know what beta means? As a developer, let me explain. beta builds contain debug symbols and are non-optimized versions of the final product. Depending on the development team, optimizing the product can be done throughout the development process or as a last pass to sure things up before release. By comparing a release build and a beta build, you are comparing an optimized version with a non-optimized version.
Ah, look Cult of Mac, someone who understands what a “beta” is!!
What a ridiculous article. Of course beta’s are slower, they have a whole bunch of debug stuff turned on so they can analyze any crashes and bugs. You can’t compare a release version to a beta.
I think it’s helpful, basically warning anyone with an older device to skip the beta.
I hate these articles. Of course it’s slower. It’s a BETA. Jeez.
The funny thing is, on my iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6S Plus, I’ve noticed speed INCREASES. It’s a lot smoother, the 3D Touch animations are far smoother on 9.3… Aside from the fact that this is a beta and worse performance is expected…I just thought I’d point out that I’m noticing speed increases here.
Same here.
But I have to agree with others, my iPhone 6 is slower AND there is a considerable amount of heat now.
In other news: the Pope is Catholic.
