It looks like a small number of third-generation Apple TVs, the ones on sale right now, are being quietly recalled by Apple. There hasn’t been a public notice of an Apple TV recall, which could mean only a few units are defective.
If yours is among the faulty Apple TVs, chances are you’ll get an email offering to replace it — and Apple might even drop you an iTunes card for your troubles.
MacRumors author Mitch Broussard had his Apple TV recalled, and when he checked in with Apple to make sure it wasn’t some sort of scam, he received a reply from Apple.
“Hi Mitchel,
I understand the concern, Apple typically does not reach out to customers proactively this way.
I just need you to confirm that you have this device and to make sure I have the right shipping address (i see that below). I will then send you a new apple tv, we will email FedEx labels to send back the old one then once we get the old one, we will send you an iTunes gift card for the troubles.”
Some folks with defective units might not even notice an issue in performance, says Broussard, but Apple will connect with you if you have the defective parts in your Apple TV. You don’t have to check serial numbers or anything like that, as you will be contacted directly by Apple.
We’ve reached out to Cupertino to confirm that this Apple TV recall is legitimate, and will update as soon as we hear back.

Has Apple ever recalled anything before? Seems a bit odd when we are so close to an event with a possible new ATV.
Yes. For example old iPod nano’s were replaced with new ones when a defect was found and they reached out to me offering a replacement.
Quietly? Should they broadcast the recall news on all national channels and internationally? SMH.
Seriously? I wouldn’t confirm squat over email.
I’ve heard (from my trusted source) that they’ve actually packaged and shipped ATV4 by mistake.
