iPhone users could use AI to create their own artwork for playlists in Apple Music, according to code reportedly found in the latest iOS 18 beta. The feature would use Apple Intelligence’s ability to generate images based on simple instructions.
If true, this is be one of multiple new artificial intelligence capabilities coming to iPhone.
Add custom artwork to Apple Music Playlists with the power of AI
Apple Intelligence is the most significant collection of features added to iPhone in years. Safari, Mail and other apps will use artificial intelligence to summarize large amounts of text, there’ll be new AI-powered writing tools in several apps, users will be able to create their own emoji and images, and much more.
Custom artwork for Apple Music Playlists is also supposedly on the list of upcoming AI capabilities. An unconfirmed report found evidence of the feature in iOS 18 Beta 4, released Tuesday.
“Strings suggest that there will be a ‘Create Image’ button when editing a playlist,” reports 9to5Mac. “This button will invoke Image Playground, which is part of the Apple Intelligence features.”
Image Playground is similar to other AI-powered image-creation tools. Users describe what they want with prompts and the computer generates the picture. Apple’s version supports three different art styles: a 3D render, 2D sketch or illustration.
Coming soon-ish
Note that AI-generated Apple Music playlists are not included in iOS 18 Beta 4, just references to the feature in the code. It might be added to the OS later, but it might not. And there’ll be a wait, even if the feature is implemented.
Although the big Apple Intelligence unveil was the highlight of WWDC 2024 in June, the AI features won’t launch when iOS 18 does in early autumn. They’ll trickle out in the months afterward in subsequent updates.
And keep in mind that the only handsets that can handle Apple’s AI features are the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, though the entire iPhone 16 lineup is expected to support them. On the other hand, iPads and Mac going back several years will be able to take advantage of Apple Intelligence.
