Good luck forcing your iPhone 8 to reboot.
If your device ever becomes unresponsive, you’ll have to remember Apple’s complicated new process to restart it. It’s no longer as simple as holding down two buttons.
That’s how easy it used to be. On earlier iPhones, you simply had to hold down the Home and power buttons together until you saw the Apple logo. With the removal of the physical Home button on iPhone 7, Apple switched it to the volume down and power buttons.
But with iPhone 8, the process is annoyingly complicated. It’s finicky to perform and even more difficult to remember. Here’s what Apple makes you do:
- Press and quickly release the volume up button
- Press and quickly release the volume down button
- Press and hold the “Side button” (power button) until you see the Apple logo
It’s not clear why Apple changed the process for iPhone 8, which has exactly the same physical buttons as iPhone 7. It’s not like it needed to be changed for iPhone X, either, since Apple negated the need to use a Home button last year.
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it’s easy to accidentally hold down the volume down button while holding down the Side button. Maybe too many people were inadvertently rebooting their iPhones when attempting to power them off?
But if that’s the case, why didn’t Apple change the process for iPhone 7, too? Why does that remain the same, while iPhone 8 owners must remember this one?
We’re not sure, and Apple doesn’t offer an explanation. But if you have an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus, it may be worth jotting down Apple’s new puzzle in case you need it in the future.

Honestly I actually prefer this method. It can be done with one hand is super easy. I hated holding down the volume button with one hand and the power button with the other.
Yeah that’s REALLY complicated, not sure how I will remember that?! Seriously, how is this even worthy of its own article? I grew up remembering cheat codes like up, c, down c, left c, right c…. and now we are moaning about up, down, hold power?!!!! Come on, report on something worth reporting on!
Whoever wrote this article clearly didn’t do any research because Apple doesn’t need to explain this. if you try the old code you would clearly see that it engages emergency SOS because in a emergency it’s easier to hold those 2 buttons even if you can see the phone (like in a pocket) … a soft reset can be a little more complicated because it’s usually not done that often or that time pressing.
You are probably right.
Ridiculously complicated is a little strong, don’t you think?
It might be for the person writing the article.
Well, its not exactly “ridiculously complicated” unless your retarded…LOL
Ummmm…you said retarded…not really PC…lol…jk
No..I hate political correctness, makes my bullshit’ometer go nuts
Well at least there is one sane individual out here…have a great day
Not sure who that would be…
Bashing so-called “political correctness” is usually an excuse to engage in insensitive, even bigoted, remarks and behavior!
There are terms that are inherently offensive and should be avoided. It’s hardly b.s.!
You know there is a menupoint in System->Generel “Shutdown”?! ;)
That isn’t easy if your phone froze.
Konapple code.
