Adobe Premiere, the powerful video editing suite used for years on Macs, just arrived on the iPhone. Now you can cut together your next video using Premiere’s professional tools, right from your phone.

The Adobe Premiere iPhone app, released Tuesday, offers precision editing, automatic captions, stock music and more.

It doesn’t come with the big price tag of the desktop Adobe suite — in fact, it’s free. You only have to pay if you want access to its Firefly AI features, like its generative sound effects and Image Expand tool.

Premiere is available today for iPhone and iPad from the App Store.

Adobe brings Premiere to the iPhone

Adobe Premiere Pro is one of the preeminent video editors for macOS and Windows. It’s been used to edit numerous well-known movies and TV shows, including Deadpool, Gone Girl, The Social Network, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and the series Mindhunter, The Bear, and many, many more. Premiere was the first video editor for Mac built on the then-new QuickTime framework in 1991, with a Windows version debuting two years later. Today, Premiere Pro is part of the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of professional products, alongside Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and more.

Adobe has been expanding its suite into mobile devices: Photoshop for iPad first arrived in 2019, followed up in 2020 by Fresco and Illustrator. Earlier this year, the company shrank its software down by another form factor when Photoshop debuted on the iPhone.

Edit entirely on the go

Premiere for iPhone gives you the power to edit multitrack videos with precision right in your hand. Quickly zoom in on the track to make perfect cuts — with a convenient button in the toolbar to go frame-by-frame. Stack up a bunch of layers to make complex timelines, just as you’re used to.

Captioning a video is practically a requirement for success on TikTok and Instagram, and Premiere makes it easy. There are tons of built-in preset styles, including ones that animate with each spoken word.

You can tap a clip to select it and browse through effects to add. The “Background Noise” effect, for example, lets you dial down the sounds of the environment, focusing on your voice and/or music.

It also comes with stock assets you can use, from royalty-free music, stock video clips, fonts, images and stickers.

Powerful AI features

Premiere for iPhone comes with a bunch of AI features built-in.

Generative sound effects let you describe the sound you want to create. You can even record yourself mimicking the noise, and it’ll create a sound that matches your speed and timing — so it’s perfect for your video. It gives you four options to choose from.

While Premiere automatically blurs the content to fill the screen when it’s the wrong aspect ratio, you can also use the Expand Image tool. It’ll fill the top and bottom halves of a video so it fits perfectly.

You can export videos right from your phone in a variety of resolutions, frame rates, levels of quality and formats. It also has one-tap presets for social media, like TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram.

If you’d like to pick up the work at your computer, you can send it via Adobe cloud storage to Premiere on desktop.

Premiere is available now for iPhone and iPad, with an Android version in development.
