You probably can’t guess one of the reasons why Apple wants people to stop leaking the specifications of upcoming iPhone models. Image: the Hacker 34/Cult of Mac
Apple hates it when people leak details about its upcoming devices. No surprise there. But an order to stop spreading rumors about unreleased iPhone models that the company reportedly sent to a Chinese citizen gives an unexpected reason.
Many of these features are expected to be in the real iPhone 13. Some are just wishes, though. Screenshot: the Hacker 34
The next iPhone is just a couple of months away, but an artist has given us an early glimpse of what it might look like. His iPhone 13 concept combines new features revealed leaks and rumors, but there are also a couple that are just hopes.

The third-gen iPhone SE could be Apple most affordable 5G handset. Photo: Apple
An iPhone SE updated with 5G is less than a year away, according to a trusted Apple analyst. Because of its lower price, the model could put high-speed cellular wireless connectivity in the hands of far more people.
In 2022, every iPhone will allegedly be either 6.1 inches or 6.7 inches. Photo: Apple
Apple will release two 6.7-inch iPhone models in 2022, according to a reliable analyst. There’ll be a high-end “Pro” model in this size, but the second will reportedly have a lower price.
The iPhone Max will supposedly replace the 5.4-inch iPhone mini in Apple’s product lineup. That model reportedly isn’t selling well, and it seems Apple is going to the opposite extreme in screen size for its successor.
If Apple makes a foldable iPhone, it might look like this concept design. Screenshot: ConceptsiPhone
A folding iPhone is two years away, according to a trusted industry analyst. When open, the device will have an 8-inch screen, significantly bigger than the current largest iOS model, which has a 6.7-inch display.

Among the improvements expected in the iPhone 13 is a smaller notch. The latest evidence is a 3D-printed mockup of the device that supposedly shows how Apple rearranged the components behind the screen cutout for the upcoming model.
The iPhone SE Plus might have a hole punch camera, not a notch. Artists concept: Cult of Mac
Don’t get your hopes up for an iPhone SE Plus this year. Or next. This is rumored to be the first in the SE series with an edge-to-edge screen, but an analyst focused on the display business said Thursday that the wait will stretch into 2023.
However, a new model using the current design might arrive before then.

A growing number of voices predict that the next-generation iPhone will come with a fingerprint scanner built into its screen. If true, it will mark the welcome return of Touch ID to Apple’s premium models after several long years.
VR glasses is one of the secret projects that a former Apple employee might have leaked to the press. Concept: the Hacker 34
Apple filed a lawsuit against Simon Lancaster on Thursday, accusing the former employee of leaking company secrets to the media.
He worked at Apple as a materials engineer for over 11 years, helping to design upcoming products. That gave him access to information not publicly available. Apple alleges he traded that info for personal gain.
This isn’t an improvement. Artists concept: Cult of Mac
Apple might get rid of the screen notch in the 2022 iPhone. But before you start celebrating, there’ll be a hole-punch camera in its place, according a trusted analyst. If true, this will be one step forward and two steps back.
The notch is a superior solution to a hole in the middle of the display. Here’s why.
A faster refresh rate might be a highlight of 2021’s iPhone 13. Concept: ConceptsiPhone
As the saying goes, you can never be too rich or have too long a battery life. Apple apparently listened, because a respected analyst says there will be room in all the 2021 iPhone 13 models for larger batteries.
These iOS handsets supposedly will all come with smaller notches, better 5G modems and fancier cameras, too.
The 2020 iPhone SE is Apple’s most affordable new model, but it’s getting a high-end feature in 2022. Photo: Apple
Apple won’t update the iPhone SE in 2021, according to a trusted analyst. But there is a new version coming the year after. And this will be the first in this line of budget iOS handsets with 5G cellular networking.
Don’t anticipate two-way inductive charging in the iPhone 13. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
Don’t expect the 2021 iPhone to be able to charge AirPods or Apple Watch. A reliable tipster says Apple doesn’t intend to build reverse wireless charging into future handsets. Not anytime soon, at least.
The iPhone 13 could stand out from its predecessors thanks to an always-on display. Artist’s concept: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
The iPhone 13 series will borrow the always-on screen from the Apple Watch, according to an unconfirmed report. And the upcoming iPhone supposedly will support some new camera tricks, including Portrait Mode for video.
It’s shaping up to perhaps be more than a speed-bumped version of Apple’s 2020 models.
The first folding iPhone might look something like this. Screenshot: Front Page Tech
Apple could have decided on the look of the first folding iPhone. Previously, the company was thought to be considering two options, but the winner is a “flip phone” design, according to a trusted Apple prognosticator.
The same source also has a hint that the folding iPhone might cost less than rival flexible phones. But it supposedly will not arrive before 2023 (and could come even later). With Apple’s focus on durability, the foldable iPhone could incorporate an advanced Liquidmetal hinge to improve longevity. Read more about Apple’s potential innovation here.
The iPhone 13 might have more storage but less screen cutout. Artist Concept: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
The iPhone 13 is in the prototype phase, and some of those prototypes include 1TB of storage capacity, according to a reliable tipster. That’s twice as much as is available in the current model.
The same source says Apple is still working to decease the size of the iPhone notch.
Is the number 13 too unlucky to be in an iPhone name? Photo: Cult of Mac
The followup to the iPhone 12 might not be called the iPhone 13. Instead, a reliable source says it will such a minor update it’ll be dubbed iPhone 12s.
And triskaidekaphobia could cause Apple to skip straight to the iPhone 14.
Touch ID could be back, but not as you know it. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
A fingerprint scanner might once again be part of Apple’s iPhone line, according to a reliable source. Touch ID might appear in 2021 alongside Face ID, not in place of it.
Also, Apple reportedly has a folding screen in the prototype stage.
The 2022 iPhone could sport an advanced cooling system. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
A powerful processor and 5G wireless networking will force Apple to build a cooling system into the 2022 iPhone, according to an analyst and trusted Apple prognosticator.
But the system Apple is reportedly investigating won’t be ready in time for the iPhone 13, expected this autumn.

Apple is reportedly testing two different folding iPhone designs. But only one of them has a flexible screen. If one of the prototypes successfully passes testing, it could become the first foldable iOS handset.
