To avoid mistakes made by rivals, Apple reportedly will do everything it can to create a crease-free folding iPhone with a durable hinge. According to a report released Friday, that includes producing the hinges using a liquid metal process.

The innovative handset should arrive in 2026.

Other companies enjoy a significant lead over Apple in the foldable phone category. For instance, Samsung already released the sixth generation of its Galaxy Z Fold. However, a visible screen crease and questions about durability mean these foldables remain niche products. By all accounts, Apple will avoid these flaws.

“According to recent industry research, Apple is focused on improving durability, enhancing screen flatness, and minimizing crease marks in its foldable iPhone design,” said Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst with TF International Securities, in a research note published Friday.

“To achieve these goals, key components like the hinges will be crafted from liquid metal using a die-casting process,” the analyst went on to say. “Apple has been using liquid metal for small components for years (such as SIM ejector pins), but the foldable iPhone will mark its first major use of the material in a critical mechanical part.”

The phrase “liquid metal” doesn’t mean the folding iPhone’s hinges will be made of mercury. The industry term describes a process for producing parts by injecting molten alloys into dies in a vacuum. The process enables extremely precise manufacturing and can produce high-strength parts — just what Apple needs for hinges on a folding iPhone.

Chinese company Dongguan Yihao Metal will make the components for Apple, according to Kuo. A manufacturing partner of Liquidmetal, Dongguan Yihao Metal entered into a manufacturing agreement to become the primary contract manufacturer of Liquidmetal’s products.

It’s really happening

Kuo is far from the only source pointing to a folding iPhone in early production. ETnews recently reported that Samsung Display solved a major technical challenge and is preparing to supply Apple with foldable screens without an ugly screen crease.

The Wall Street Journal indicated in late 2024 said Apple picked a book-style design for its first folding iPhone. The device essentially would open into a small iPad.

Multiple sources predict the device will reach customers in 2026. But start saving your pennies now. Large-screen foldables are always expensive and the first folding iPhone isn’t likely to be an exception.
