If you’re a dad like me, the only tie you want for Father’s day is this one. What we do want, are some kick ass games for guys. EA has answered our plea, and graciously discounted a slew of manly titles across multiple platforms.
There’s something about a really well-edited photo that just “pops”. And then there are the photos that have had creative filters applied and you just see the image in a whole new way. You know it’s not magic right? You know that all it takes is practice, the right image, and…the right software.
Sure, iPhoto is pretty good and Aperture is powerful, but neither of them are really designed for effects (or layering effects), which is where FX Photo Studio Pro comes in. Part of the Cult Of Mac Deals FX Photo Studio Pro is usually $40 in the Mac App Store, but you can get it for $20 now!
Your music is important to you, so why use the crappy earbuds that came with your device? Oh sure, they are great as a backup pair to have in a drawer or your gear bag (in case you forget your good ones), but let’s face it, basic earbuds don’t do anyone’s music justice.
How do you organize all of your images? Not just the photos, which iPhoto is okay at doing, but screenshots, wallpapers, mockups, all the rest of the stuff? If you’re like me, you probably have either everything in your Pictures folder or in a cascade of folders on your Mac. I think we should be smarter than that, shouldn’t we?
Turns out, it’s not all our faults. There haven’t been great apps for organizing your existing images, without actually making them less accessible. Then came Sparkbox, things changed, and we’re happier. Which is good, because Sparkbox is today’s deal—Sparkbox – Cult of Mac Deals.
You have an idea for the next great app. The app that will become essential for all iPhone (or iPad) owners. But there’s a problem, you don’t know how to make an app. No problem, you get some books, look at some tutorials, and then it hits you.
You still need to learn C and Objective C to be able to actually code the app.
This is where today’s deal comes in. Unlike many “learn to make and iOS app” courses that skip the foundation of C and Objective C. This course doesn’t. This is a true Foundations for iOS Development Course.
Photoshop Elements 10 is the Photoshop for “regular people”, sure Photoshop is awesomely powerful, but Photoshop also awesomely complex. So we have Photoshop Elements for “the rest of us”, but working with photos is still a pretty complicated and (potentially) daunting task. Hey, I’ve been there. Lots of “good” photos that you want to make “great” but don’t really know how to tap into all the power and features of Elements to get that done. That’s where a video course on Photoshop Elements 10 from Udemy comes in. Regularly a course like this (8 hours of content over 90 lectures) is $49, but now you can get it for only $19.
Taking standardized tests is rite of passage of sorts in our world. It starts in elementary school and continues through to professional certifications and exams. And for better or for worse—how you do on some of these tests can steer the course of your life. With all that’s riding on doing well on the SATs, GREs, the Bar Exam, a lot of people get pretty wound up about taking the test. Stress, cramming, practice tests, more stress.
It doesn’t have to be like that. You can prep for these tests and learn what you need to learn and get a better score if you have the right tools to help you. Not a replacement for studying or learning the material, but helping you learn how to take the test better. This is what BenchPrep is for. An online test prep package that will help you get ready for the tests and hopefully take some of the stress out of taking them.
Are you ready to go paperless, but need a great way to convert your scans to editable text? Do you get lots of PDFs to review and need something with more oomph than Preview for edits, annotations, and changes? PDF is a great file format, but sometimes it’s frustrating when you need to do other stuff to them like convert them to another format, edit them, or pull out images or text for other documents. This is why you need PDF Editor Pro.
If you’ve ever wanted to build apps on the iPad, then keep reading, because we’ve searched high and low for a solid iPad development course…and we’ve finally found a great match. Put your hand up if you can do more with PowerPoint than make a simple presentation that goes from slide to slide? Fine, you can put your hand up if you know how to make a transition. The thing is though, PowerPoint is a pretty powerful program and can do a lot more than just a simple slideshow. Sure, PowerPoint gets a bad wrap for the terrible slides that people produce—not PowerPoint’s fault, typewriters have been used to write dreck for years!—but you can make a stunning visual impact with PowerPoint—if you know how.
MacKeeper gets a bad rap, but what's really behind the controversy?
MacKeeper is a strange piece of software. There may be no other app as controversial in the Apple world. The application, which performs various janitorial duties on your hard drive, is loathed by a large segment of the Mac community. Check out any blog, site or forum that mentions it, and you’ll find hundreds of furious comments condemning MacKeeper and Zeobit, the company behind it. We discovered this ourselves earlier this month, when we offered a 50%-off deal on MacKeeper. Look at all those furious comments on the post.
The complaints about MacKeeper are all over the shop: It’s a virus. It holds your machine hostage until you pay up. It can’t be completely removed if you decide to delete it. Instead of speeding up your computer, it slows it down. It erases your hard drive, deletes photos, and disappears documents. There are protests about MacKeeper’s annual subscription fees. Zeobit is slammed for seedy marketing tactics. It runs pop-under ads, plants sock-puppet reviews and encourages sleazy affiliate sites, critics say.
But what’s really strange is that MacKeeper has been almost universally praised by professional reviewers. All week I’ve been checking out reviews on the Web and I can’t find a bad one.
Last week a group of developers banded together to celebrate pricing freedom by launching the Because We May promotion. The promotion, which ends June 1, includes heavily discounted games across multiple platforms. Since its launch, Because We May has received great support and the list of games available has grown tremendously.
It’s the next big thing. It’s what makes all the great—and cool—websites, not to mention powerful mobile apps (like LinkedIn’s new app for iOS). What is it? HTML 5 and CSS. Demand for HTML5-powered sites is going through the roof. Everyone wants an amazing site that behaves just like an app. The question is, do you know HTML 5? No? Now you can learn.

How’s that for a deal? Only $49 and you can become a web wizard and start making the next big thing.
With Office 2011, Microsoft killed off Entourage—and I don’t think anyone shed tears over that—and brought in Outlook for Mac. Outlook 2011 for Mac brings a lot of the power of Outlook for Windows to the Mac for the first time, but the question is—can you master it?
In this special course you’ll learn Outlook for Mac 2011 for only $24! That’s over half off for three and a half hours of hands-on instruction on Outlook. This is an in-depth course that will make you an Outlook Jedi in no time.
If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to build an iPhone & iPad game but didn’t know how to code, you’ve come to the right place. The latest Cult of Mac Deals offer is a video course featuring over 8.5 hours of information that will teach you how to build an iPhone/iPad game using Game Salad – a free third-party piece of software.
This course is aimed at beginners who want to make games today but have no desire to program (or want an easier starting point than traditional coding courses). This offer is aimed at people who want to save money in the process, as you’ll get access to The iOS Games Workshop for only $79 for a limited time!
A group of developers have banded together to celebrate their freedom to price their games how they like within specific online stores. Most online app stores give developers this freedom, but others such as the Amazon App Store do not. Amazon allows a developer to set a recommended price for their app but reserves the right to change that price whenever they want. I can’t really think of another app store besides the Amazon App Store, so this coalition almost feels like an anti-Amazon App Store celebration to me.
Forklift is great, and costs less than a buck, which rounding down for inflation is basically free.
If you’re the kind of web monkey who finds himself spitting up or slurping down loads of files over good old FTP, this is a fantastic deal: Forklift by Binary Nights — widely hailed as one of the best and most elegant FTP/SFTP clients and file management programs available for the Mac — is usually on sale for $29.99, and depending on how much FTPing you do, a pretty good deal at that. But right now? You can grab it for less than a buck, no strings attached.

In what might be a move to clear out current inventory to make room for the upcoming line of Ivy Bridge Macs, Best Buy has slashed prices on all current generation Macs. Every single machine has been reduced in price, and while most discounts aren’t astounding, the extra $100-$200 saved on a new MacBook, iMac, Mac Mini, or Mac Pro, might be enough to entice customers who can’t wait another minute for a new Mac.
These type of discounts usually don’t happen without some involvement by Apple. It’s not uncommon for Apple to notify vendors of expected supply shortages before a transition to a new product line. Apple is expected to release new Macs this summer that utilize Intel’s new Ivy Bridge processors, so buy with caution. You can purchase the discounted Macs at your local Best Buy, or online.
Here’s a break down of the discounts you’ll find online:
