Philips Hue may cost more, but it’s a significantly better system because it’s code is open to developers. I’ve programmed mine to be controlled by my Mac, and since Macs can be controlled by Apple Remote (I’m talking about Apple’s small physical remote control units), it means you can control Hue by remote… and if you teach your universal remote the Apple Remote buttons, you can have control Hue lights with your universal remote. That’s how I have mine set up, and it’s pretty awesome. Controlling your lights by smartphone is nice, but doing it that way every time grows old fast. But being able to control your lights using your phone, your Mac, or even your universal remote… well, that’s pretty awesome.
These are $79. Hue’s are $49-$59 depending on where you buy. These are more $$ unless I read something wrong??
Also Hue has a self powered light switch with 3 programmable buttons on it. You can mount this anywhere. It actually generates it’s own power by the mechanical action of pressing the button. The remote possibilities are endless with this.
You’re right – that 3 button gizmo that powers itself is pretty cool. I forgot about that. Hue has a bit of an up-front cost. When I bought mine, the starter pack with the required router was $200, but it was totally worth it. I bought mine in spring, 2012 and I really love it. Another feature I love is the GeoFence, where my lights automatically turn on when I walk in the door if it’s after dark (actually, they turn on when I’m about half a block away). It’s pretty awesome never having to walk into a dark home. Love it!
Hue is an amazingly flexible system.

The geo-fence is great! And it adjusts for the time of year too.
