I can only speak for Tonality in this deal. What I can say for Tonality is: buy it. Granted Google offers Nik Silver Effects for the princely sum of bupkis, nada, free and you do have to pay for Tonality but Tonality is far superior to Silver Effects. The app is just amazing. If you pony up for the CK or pro version you get a truly powerful yet easy to use photo editing suite.

While some of the young whippersnappers might be a little confused by the old school film options “what is this Tri-X of which you speak?” those who remember this film and Ilford Pan F and are very happy to have them back from their long absence.

But not to worry young guns, there are also HDR effects and other options that will make your Millennial hearts go pitter-pat, there are even some effects for all you Hipsters and Hipster wannabes. Plus you can really get under the hood and granular in pro using add on textures and messing around with tone curves.

I now own just about every Macphun application out there, plus a wee bit more and I can say that the Macphun apps are my go to Lightroom plugins. These guys have a raft of photo apps and they are mostly fabulous. I can not speak for all of them but I can say that Tonality is the best Black and White conversion app out there, as far as I know. Only one fly in the ointment, pushing those pixels does hammer a Mac’s resources, this might not be the best choice if you are running a base model anything or a more elderly Mac. You need lots of RAM and a strong video card or things do tend to get a little slow. My Mac does have the RAM, the video card not so much, so things do get a little slow with render times. The only work around is to not have anything else running in the background, no browser, no iTunes, no nothing just the Macphun product and Lightroom.
