Ed Hardy has been writing full-time about tech for 25 years, and using it for much longer than that. His intro to Apple was a Macintosh SE/30 (which he still has), but now he uses a 13-inch iPad Pro as his primary computer.
That's because he's a "tablet first" type of guy. Rather than use a Macbook, he connects a keyboard case to the iPad. And instead of a desktop Mac, he connects his tablet to a 27-inch display and full-size keyboard. (So don't try to tell him that everyone has to use a Mac to be productive.)
Before coming to Cult of Mac, Ed wrote for NotebookReview, TabletPCReview and Brighthand, as well as other sites.
OpenAI introduces a native ChatGPT app for Mac, and it's free for all users. Photo: Unsplash
OpenAI made the native ChatGPT Mac app available for all users Wednesday. It gives Mac users easy access to the artificial intelligence capabilities of the cutting-edge chatbot, as well as features not available with the web interface.
The free macOS app is “designed to integrate seamlessly into anything you’re doing on your computer,” according to OpenAI.
Your iPhone 14 or iPhone 15 can save your neck by sending out an SOS for help over a satellite connection. Photo: Apple/Cult of Mac
If you own an iPhone 14 or iPhone 15, it’s time to test one of its best abilities: Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite service. This allows users of these iOS handsets to exchange messages with emergency services while outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.
Getting a compatible iPhone in contact with a satellite isn’t complicated. But it’s something users should know how to do before they need this potentially lifesaving feature.
Here’s how to use the iPhone’s Emergency SOS via satellite feature.
Fixing your MacBook is easier if you know what's broken. Photo: Apple
The Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair software tool launched on Europe on Wednesday. It lets those who want to fix their own iPhone or Mac identify which parts may need repair.
In addition, Apple announced that MacBook Air models with the M3 processor that launched in March 2024 are now part of the Self Service Repair program.
When Apple Intelligence was unveiled at WWDC24, Craig Federighi didn't answer a burning question. Photo: Apple
The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will be able to run Apple Intelligence features, but no other current phone can handle the upcoming AI-powered features. Apple’s reasons for the limitation seem somewhat vague, at least so far. They don’t fully explain why a 2-year-old iPhone chip isn’t up to the job but a 4-year-old Mac chip is.
As it stands, some people harbor suspicions that it’s an attempt to force iPhone users to upgrade to the latest models this fall. And some iPhone 15 owners are angry that their relatively new devices won’t be able to take advantage of Apple Intelligence.
Cult of Mac asked Apple to explain the decision but we didn’t hear back. So, I’ll do what Apple hasn’t: Go through a range of hardware features and explore what role they might play in keeping Apple AI off so many iPhones.
The Files app has some new tricks. Image: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 let users reformat external drives as well as keep a copy of a file on iCloud permanently stored locally.
Both features were found by developers tinkering with the first betas of these operating systems, and should make the Files app on iPhone and iPad more useful.
The European Union's DMA is proving to be an enormous challenge for Apple. Photo: European Commission
The European Commission said Monday that it made a preliminary decision that Apple breached the EU’s Digital Markets Act. Apple’s rules “prevent [iPhone] app developers from freely steering consumers to alternative channels for offers and content,” according to the EC.
The commission also said it started an investigation into whether Apple’s new Core Technology Fee complies with the DMA. If Apple doesn’t change its policies, the EC could levy extremely heavy fines.
Sorry EU, no Apple Intelligence for you! Image: Lewis Wallace/Cult of Mac
Apple revealed Friday that it will not introduce in the European Union the artificial intelligence features for iPhone, Mac and iPad it recently announced. The company blamed the EU’s Digital Markets Act for the decision.
Several other new features of the upcoming macOS Sequoia, iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 will also not debut in the EU.

M4 iPad Pro or M2 iPad Air users that have been waffling on Apple Pencil Pro, Amazon has a deal that might convince you that now is the time to get the powerful stylus. The third generation model from Apple adds a new “squeeze” gesture and Find My support, and you can grab one now for just $119.

Twelve South ButterFly is ready to charge your devices wherever you go. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
Twelve South ButterFly is a 2-in-1 MagSafe iPhone and and Apple Watch travel charger that folds into a tiny package. It offers fast-charging and can serve as a kickstand for your handset.
It’s a bit pricy, but an innovative design makes it very portable. I put the gadget to the test.
The Reply button in Apple Mail on iPhone does way, way more than you might expect. Image: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
The Reply button in the iPhone version of Apple Mail does a whole lot more than let you reply to messages. For some reason, Apple packed it with unrelated options.
Here’s everything lying hidden behind that simple button.
This TDK CeraCharge battery has a very high energy density. Photo: TDK
TDK Corp. recently developed a material for its next-generation solid-state battery with an energy density about 100 times greater than the current version.
The Japanese company already supplies batteries that go into iPhones and other Apple devices, so there’s hope this breakthrough eventually will benefit Apple Watch and AirPods.
Apple is supposedly working on a Vision AR headset more people can afford. Screenshot: Apple
A cheaper version of Apple’s Vision augmented reality headset has reportedly been fast-tracked. The goal is supposedly to have the scaled-back device on the market by 2025.
To accomplish this, Apple allegedly halted work on the next generation high-end Vision Pro model.

Plugable 40W Dual USB-C Charger: Powerful enough to be useful, small enough to go anywhere Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
Happily, powerful USB chargers keep getting smaller. The new Plugable 40W Dual USB-C Charger is the most portable one I’ve ever used, but it still puts out enough juice to keep a MacBook, iPad and/or iPhone going.
I went hands-on to test the capabilities of this affordable accessory.
Apple quickly dropped its buy now pay later service. Photo: Apple/Cult of Mac
Apple Pay Later, a financial tool that launched in 2023, has already been discontinued. The now-defunct service allowed shoppers to borrow up to $1,000 and pay it back in installments with no interest.
The company said Monday that, starting later this year, Apple Pay will instead allow buyers to access similar small “buy now, pay later” loans via other financial institutions’ credit and debit cards.

Logitech’s Combo Touch keyboard case for the new M4 iPad Pro offers nearly everything Apple’s beloved Magic Keyboard case does. And the Logitech version includes features Apple’s does not.
I put both peripherals through hands-on testing. Here’s where the Combo Touch comes out ahead … and where it doesn’t.
"Dark Matter," an Apple TV+ adaptation of a sci-fi bestseller, has stayed popular ever since its launch. Photo: Apple TV+
Dark Matter, one of the best sci-fi novels of the decade, has been adapted into an Apple TV+ series that spent its fifth week as one of the most popular offerings on any streaming service, according to analysts.
And Presumed Innocent just debuted on Apple’s streaming service this week but is already getting plenty of attention.
Apple is allegedly trying to evade a provision of the DMA. Photo: Sora Shimazaki/Pexels CC
The European Commission is reportedly getting ready to charge Apple for not following rules laid down by Digital Markets Act that require the iPhone maker to allow third-party software developers to “steer” consumers to offers outside the App Store, free of charge.
If found guilty, Apple faces potentially heavy fines.
iPadOS 18 includes the Calculator app that iPad deserves. Photo: Apple
iPad never before included a built-in Calculator app because there wasn’t one Steve Jobs felt was worthy of a tablet. That all changes with iPadOS 18, which boasts a new Apple Calculator app that you can write into with Apple Pencil.
Don't try to make a Genmoji with the first iOS 18 beta. Image: Apple
The AI capabilities Apple announced at WWDC24 are nowhere to be seen in the first round of betas for iOS 18, macOS Sequoia and iPadOS 18. This despite the new Apple Intelligence features, like the ability to summarize documents or create new emoji on the fly, are the highlights of the upcoming operating system upgrades.
So those eager to try Apple AI can hold off installing these buggy prerelease versions. It’ll only be a disappointment.
Smart Script can make your handwriting easier to read, while staying your handwriting. Photo: Apple
Apple’s Notes app in iPadOS 18 includes a new feature called Smart Script that allows users to handwrite text and then have it smoothed and straightened in real time. It promises to make text scrawled on the tablet with an Apple Pencil more readable and aesthetically pleasing.
I tested Smart Script on my iPad Pro with Apple Pencil. It’s not doing exactly what you might think — let me explain.
A market cap of $3.3 trillion Illustration: Cult of Mac
Apple rose to once again become the world’s most valuable publicly traded company on Wednesday. Its market capitalization passed $3.3 trillion, once again putting the Mac-maker ahead of Microsoft.
This comes just days after Apple dropped to third place when Nvidia’s share market cap briefly rose ahead. But AAPL has been on a tear since announcing plans this week to integrate AI into iPhone, Mac and other products.
Update:Stocks go down as well as up, and when Wall Street closed on Wednesday, Microsoft’s valuation was slightly higher than Apple’s.
iPhone and Android texting is better with RCS. Image: Apple
Apple previewed support for RCS messaging in the iOS 18 Messages app at WWDC24. Adding Rich Communication Services will bring enhanced texting between iPhone and Android users, with features not possible before.
It’s a change Apple dragged its feet on for many years. Along with RCS support, Apple is also introducing new features like polls for iMessage, enhancing group chat interactions. Learn more about these changes.
Tap to Cash allows users to send and receive Apple Cash by holding two iPhone devices together. Photo: Apple
Sending money to another iPhone user is about to get as simple as holding the two handsets near each other. The upcoming feature is called Tap to Cash.
It’s a private and secure payment system. The two users don’t even need to exchange phone numbers.
