UPDATE: This article is now moot because the wait is over! iOS 27 is now out for everyone:
iOS 27 will roll out to iPhones everywhere on September 14, but there’s no need to wait. You can install the final version this weekend and start exploring the new features whenever you have time.
Best of all, there’s nothing dodgy or risky involved. You’ll be downloading the same final release Apple will push to everyone else — just a few days ahead of schedule.
Apple seeded iOS 16.1 to developers on Wednesday and could give the general public access on Thursday. But you should think twice about installing it if you intend to get an iPhone 14 as soon as it’s released.
It’s likely the new handset will launch running an earlier version of iOS, which might cause you difficulties.
Anyone can put the macOS Monterey beta on their Mac — it’s no longer reserved for developers. Apple added the pre-release version to its public beta program on Thursday.
Installing it is free, and not too difficult. Here’s how begin playing with macOS Monterey yourself.
Everyone in Apple’s beta program is running a pre-release version of the next iOS version. Which is great, until you get a new iPhone or iPad. Then you can’t restore the new device from the backup made on your previous one because the old device is running a newer OS.
If you find yourself in this situation, don’t panic — there are a couple of possible solutions. We’ll walk you through both.
Apple unveiled iOS 14 back in June, and it’s chock-full of new features. The long wait for the software’s release must be wearing on many iPhone users. But Apple is almost finished development, to the point where the latest iOS 14 beta is almost as stable as the final version will be. Anyone tired of waiting would be relatively safe installing it.
The same goes for iPadOS 14.
After giving developers access to iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 betas in June, Apple on Thursday let the general public test prerelease versions, too.
The are significant upgrades, packed with features that won‘t be available in non-beta form until autumn.
More than developers can test iOS 13.4.5 and the iPad equivalent. Starting Thursday, the general public can download a beta version if they’re brave enough to run pre-release software.
Just be aware, these updates are almost entirely about fixing bugs in the iOS and iPadOS versions released March 24, not new features.
The final version of iPadOS 13.4 was just released to anyone who joins Apple’s public beta program. This is a big upgrade for iPad users, adding robust mouse support and other improvements.
The same goes for iOS 13.4 golden master, which brings iCloud folder sharing to iPhones.
The wait is over for iCloud folder sharing… at least for everyone willing to install the initial iOS 13.4 public beta or its iPad equivalent. And there’s new Memoji stickers, tablet users can remap some keys, plus some other new features to experiment with.
Anyone who wants to get a jump on iOS 13.1 can do so: the first public beta of this version was just released.
This includes features that apparently won‘t be in iOS 13 when it debuted in a few weeks.
Apple just introduced a fifth beta of iOS 13 to the general public. All the really significant new features appeared in earlier betas, but this one does have a nice tweak: switching to Dark Mode takes only pushing a button.
Apple also released the closely-related iPadOS 13 Public beta 5, as did tvOS 13.
Anyone who’s fed up with iTunes can put the latest pre-release version of macOS Catalina on their Mac now and start using the new Apple Music, Apple Podcast and Apple TV apps instead. Of course, today’s public beta, the fourth in the series, comes with a long list of known problems so it might not be worth the hassle.
Anyone brave enough to install onto their iPhone or iPad pre-release versions of Apple’s next operating systems can grab the latest betas. Everyone has access to iOS 13 and iPad OS 13 Public beta 4 just a day after developers got their own new version.
In addition, developers received their fifth beta of watchOS 6.
Apple’s process for pre-testing its operating systems continues to roll along. Developers can now download a fourth beta of iOS 13 and iPadOS 13.
Not to be left out, there are also fresh betas for tvOS and watchOS.
There’s a cornucopia of Apple betas out today. For starters, the public can download their second pre-release versions of iOS 13 and iPadOS 13.
And, in a curious move, developers just got tweaked versions of the betas introduced last week.
The iOS 13 and iPadOS public betas are here. And if you plan to test them, you need to take a few steps to get ready. And remember, you will be testing them. Or, more likely, you’ll be testing your own patience.
The early betas are almost always buggy, screwy and crashy. You may lose work. Weird things may happen to your iCloud data. Your favorite (and essential) apps may flat-out fail to launch.
But still, these public betas are already more stable than the very raw early developer versions. If you’re planning on trying them out, here’s how to do it.
Both the general public and developers can now download the second beta of iOS 12.3. When the final version is available, it will bring significant improvements to the Apple TV app. The latest beta continues to add features.
A second public beta of macOS Mojave 10.14.5 also just debuted. This is a bug-fix release.
The iPhone and iPad operating system pre-release version seeded only to developers yesterday is now available to everyone. iOS 12.1.1 beta 1 includes tweaks to current features but no new ones.
The public also got access to tvOS 12.1.1 beta 1 today.
Not everyone who signs up for the iOS beta program is a developer. There are journalists testing new features, and regular folks who just want to try the latest additions (despite the bugs). But what happens when the final version ships? You’re left running the beta, while everyone else is on the regular version.
Today we’ll see how to exit the iOS beta program and switch back to regular updates.
Apple seeded the third beta of iOS 12.1 to developers this afternoon. In what’s possibly a new speed record, that version is already available to the general public.
The major change coming in the final version is support for Group FaceTime, but there’re other enhancements too.
Apple is really moving on iOS 12. It has introduced new pre-release versions for both developers and the general public just a few days after the last ones.
For developers, this is the tenth beta available. For everyone else, it’s the eighth.
Developers got access to the fifth iOS 12 beta last week, and now anyone who’s interested can install this pre-release version on their iPhone and iPad.
While work is still progressing on iOS 12, and the full version isn’t anticipated until September, the betas have proved surprisingly stable.
You don’t have to wait to get the new features of iOS 12. You could install a pre-release version and start tinkering with Siri Shortcuts or Memoji now.
Apple just introduced iOS 12 public beta 4, hopefully the most stable version yet. There are both iPhone and iPad iterations.
The wait is nearing the end for the next iPhone and Mac operating systems. However, these aren’t the big upgrades announced last month. Instead, iOS 11.4.1 and macOS 10.13.6 will fix bugs in the current versions.
Apple just released the fifth beta version of each of these. The full release can’t be far behind.
Those in the general public eager to try out Apple’s next Mac operating system can now do so. The first macOS Mojave public beta was just released.
This appears to be the same version introduced last week as the second developer beta.
