Apple has filed for approval of a new MacBook ahead of the laptop’s official debut. A listing in the Eurasian Economic Commission database reveals a model number of “A2289.” Its description confirms the device is a portable Mac.
Is this the new 13-inch MacBook Pro we’ve been waiting for?
Apple revamped the MacBook Pro last year to introduce a much-improved Magic Keyboard, better cooling and more powerful internals. But if you want all that today, you must purchase the rather unwieldy 16-inch model.
The same improvements are expected to hit the 13-inch MacBook Pro early this year. And it seems Apple could be taking steps to gain approval for the machine ahead of its debut in the coming months.
Apple paves the way for new MacBook
The new EEC filing reveals an unannounced MacBook, powered by macOS Catalina, that’s likely to appear soon. Sadly, the filing doesn’t provide us with any juicier details, so we’re left guessing for now.
It’s certainly possible that this is a new MacBook Pro. Apple likely won’t keep us waiting too long for a more portable model with the latest tech. But it could also be a refresh for the MacBook Air, which was last updated six months ago.
Apple also filed for approval for its upcoming rack-mounted Mac Pro, model A2304. It’s still “coming soon,” according to Apple’s website.
Prepare your wallets
Filings like these don’t confirm much, of course — and they’re certainly not a guarantee of things to come. But new Apple products regularly pop up in the EEC database a short while before making their official debut.
The EEC previously spilled refreshes for AirPods, Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad and more. Apple’s newest iPhone lineup, complete with model numbers, was revealed last May — four months before its unveiling.
