The spectacular new 16-inch MacBook Pro we’ve all been waiting for has arrived. Apple today made “the world’s best pro notebook” official, with a larger Retina display and up to 80% faster performance.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro also introduces a brand-new Magic Keyboard that (hopefully) eliminates the problems some MacBook users suffered in recent years. And it’s on sale today!

The MacBook Pro has long been the notebook of choice for creative professionals. But its previous redesign, which removed important ports and introduced the much-loathed butterfly keyboard, left many with a sour taste in their mouths.

Apple hopes to win us back with an all-new model. It looks familiar at first glance, but lift its lid and you’re greeted by a gorgeous 16-inch Retina display and the fastest hardware Apple ever packed into a portable machine.

That new display is the star of the show. It offers a super-sharp resolution of 3072×1920, with 226 pixels per inch. That’s a whopping 6 million pixels in total, and it makes for an even more immersive “front-of-screen experience,” Apple says.

Each display is individually calibrated for accurate gamma, white point and primary colors before it leaves the factory. It’s perfect for photographers, video editors and anyone else who relies on a great screen. But it doesn’t stop there.

There’s plenty of power, too. The 16-inch MacBook Pro is powered by Intel’s latest 8-core processor, with up to 64GB of RAM, and next-generation graphics with up to 8GB of video memory.

And you won’t have to worry about the thermal throttling that plagued some earlier models. Apple is introducing a new, more advanced thermal design that allows the MacBook Pro to run at higher power for sustained periods of time. It promises a 28% increase in airflow, with a 35% larger heat sink that enables significantly improved heat dissipation.

Next-generation graphics

The 16-inch MacBook Pro steps up graphics performance in a big way. Every model features a dedicated AMD Radeon Pro 5000M series graphics chip as standard. It’s the first 7-nanometer discrete GPU for pro users, Apple says.

Max out yours with the 8GB option and you can expect up to 80% faster graphics performance. It’ll render effects 1.8 times faster, play Fortnite up to 1.6 times faster, and fly through game development in Unity up to 1.4 times faster.

Don’t worry about running out of storage, either. MacBook Pro ships with a 512GB SSD as standard, but you can upgrade to a whopping 8TB SSD — the largest ever in a notebook — if you really need it.

Stellar speakers and great battery life

Apple also improved the audio experience this time around. The 16-inch MacBook Pro packs a redesigned six-speaker system with high-fidelity sound support. It’s “the most advanced audio experience ever in a notebook,” Apple says.

Apple-patented force-canceling woofers use dual opposed speaker drivers to reduce unwanted vibrations that distort your audio. This makes your favorite tracks sound clearer and more natural than ever before, with even deeper bass.

There’s also a high-performance microphone array that delivers a 40% reduction in hiss and improved signal-to-noise ratio. Apple says it rivals that of popular, professional-grade digital microphones, delivering super-clean recording.

To power all this, Apple packed a 100Wh battery into the 16-inch MacBook Pro. That’s the largest ever in a Mac notebook, and it will give you up to 11 hours of use in between charges. That’s an hour more than the previous models.

Meet the new Magic Keyboard

Perhaps even more exciting than the 16-inch screen and insane performance is the MacBook Pro’s brand-new Magic Keyboard. It promises a refined scissor mechanism that delivers 1mm of key travel and a “stable key feel.”

It also features an Apple-designed rubber dome that stores more potential energy for a responsive key press. And the physical escape key is back, sitting right alongside the Touch Bar at the top-left of the keyboard.

“Incorporating extensive research and user studies focused on human factors and key design, the 16-inch MacBook Pro delivers a keyboard with a comfortable, satisfying and quiet typing experience,” Apple says.

The Magic Keyboard was designed to be the best typing experience ever on a Mac notebook. Here’s to hoping it’s more reliable, too.
