Apple is just days away from unveiling the iPhone 11 lineup, but the rumor mill is already turning its attention to the 2020 iPhone.
In his latest research note to investors, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims the 2020 iPhone will feature an all-new design — the first in three years.
Kuo told investors that Apple hopes three new features will boost iPhone sales to all-new highs. The analyst expects the updated form factor, 5G support and camera upgrades to serve as tentpole features of the new devices.
Unfortunately, Kuo didn’t elaborate on what the 2020 iPhone design will look like. That will give concept designers plenty of room to come up with some brilliant (and terrible) ideas while Apple locks down the features.
iPhone design: 2019 vs. 2020
Everyone expects the 2019 iPhones to look pretty similar to the iPhone X and iPhone XS. The biggest design change likely will be the new tile-shaped camera cutout in the back. Apple also might move its logo to the center of the back of the phone. That placement also would indicate where to place objects for the new two-way wireless charging feature.
Kuo’s report also mentioned Apple’s upcoming Bluetooth tracker that will rival Tile. Unlike Tile, Apple’s tracker will use ultra-wideband transmissions to make it more accurate.
Apple will reveal full details of the 2019 iPhone lineup next Tuesday. The keynote at the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park starts at 10 a.m. Pacific. Per usual, Cult of Mac will live-blog all the action. Come back and enjoy the show with us.
