The consensus view of Apple’s newly launched hunchback iPhone battery case is that it should ideally be hidden from human view, spending its life in isolation ringing bells in Notre Dame.
Immediately upon release, the Internet filled with loud, angry protesters saying this kind of thing would never have happened in Steve Jobs’ day (and accusing Jony Ive of snoozing on the job). While I’m definitely no fan of Apple’s $99 Smart Battery Case, this isn’t the first time the company has released a less-than-stellar piece of design work amidst its usually gorgeous offerings.
Check out the list below for five of the worst pieces of design to come out of Cupertino since … well, yesterday, actually.
Won’t someone think of the cables?
A cable may not seem the showiest bit of Apple design, but the company’s Lightning to USB cables are repeatedly Apple’s worst reviewed items — by its own fans. Common criticisms include the fact that they continually fray or break, often after mere months of use. Just as bad is the MagSafe Power Adapter for the old MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro.
When you take into account the less-than-disposable price Apple charges for its cables, this becomes even less excusable. Not good, Apple. Not good at all.
The infamous “hockey puck” mouse

The original iMac wasn’t the product that turned Apple’s fortunes around upon Steve Jobs’ return (that would be the iPod), but it was the machine that helped announce Apple’s intentions. And, more importantly, it publicly unveiled the talents of Jony Ive to the world, now freed of his former restraints.
But while everyone over the age of 20 likely has fond memories of Apple’s strikingly colorful first-gen iMac, there can’t be too many people who miss its awful “hockey puck” mouse, one of the most infamous pieces of bad design in Apple’s history. Jobs loved it. Ive presumably did so too. Everyone else thought it looked like a yo-yo and despaired the two years they spent being forced to work with it.
iPod Hi-Fi was less than fly

Given that Apple was all about music in the mid-2000s, it made perfect sense that the company would release its own iPod Hi-Fi, which is exactly what it did in March 2006. Jobs sold it as a system fit for “audiophiles,” with no shortage of promises that it would “redefine” the home stereo system as we knew it.
In reality, it was overly expensive compared to rival products like Bose’s SoundDock. There was also a lack of an AM/FM radio (and people didn’t even have the option of listening to Beats 1 at this stage!). Plus, the remote control it came packaged with was pretty awful, the sound was loud but disappointing, and the iPod was in a vulnerable location — secured to the dock only via the 30-pin dock connector.
Apple discontinued the iPod Hi-Fi the following year, and even pointed would-be buyers to the “hundreds of [other third-party] speakers systems designed specifically for the iPod, which provide customers with a wide variety of options.” That’s the Apple version of eating crow.
The theory people would love this iPhone case was full of holes

Photo: Apple
With all the reports of a new iPhone “c” model just around the corner, we hope Apple doesn’t repeat the offense of its dreadful official iPhone 5c case, which conspired to bring polka dots to your handset because … hey, that’s what kids want these days, isn’t it?
On top of the questionable design, the really weird thing about the official iPhone 5c case was that the colors actually appeared strangely muted — as if Apple couldn’t entirely embrace its own colorful iPhone ethos. The fact that it was less than durable was the final nail in the coffin.
Dishononorable mention: What’s in a bag?

Photo: hellosanta1225
This one might be a personal pet peeve of mine — and it’s not really an accessory, so to speak — but I’ll be darned if the cord-tied plastic bags Apple hands out at the Apple Store aren’t some of the surprisingly worst pieces of design I’ve seen from Apple.
If you’ve got a larger bag for, say, a MacBook, the poor design becomes even more apparent — the cords don’t easily fit over your shoulder and therefore can’t be carried with particular ease. I’ll fully accept being taken to task in the comments for nitpicking, but considering that Apple obsesses so much over every other detail of its packaging that the company has hand-painted box elements to ensure maximum quality, this seems a massive oversight.
The Apple Watch bags? Those are more like it.

i actually loved the Apple speakers…great sound and at the time it served my needs..
I still have the speaker, connected to airplay it is a good system.
I’ve never looked at a mophie case and thought, man that looks good.
Yeah, the iPhone battery case qualifies as nothing less than fugly.
Personally, I love Apple Store bags. Whenever I buy anything at the Apple Store, I make sure to keep the bag. They’re durable and very useful.
Agree 100%
I honestly don’t understand this titty attack that the internet is having over a battery case. This is probably the best looking, and most functional for the iPhone, in a generally ugly category. Also do people really think that Mophie cases look good? They’re hideous, like most battery cases.
Then accept that you just don’t understand.
Give it a couple of weeks … Cult Of Mac will probably be SELLING the Apple battery case. They sell all forms of useless & unnecessary crap — don’t they?
@David GorskiI … I also save that Apple bags, they are cool, and very reusable.
I like the speakers too, almost bought one at a second hand store a couple of weeks ago, but, it was a bit more used than I would have liked. Also, you couldn’t be more wrong about the apple bags, they’re pretty cool.
The larger Apple Store bags are designed to strap on like a backpack for when you purchase MacBooks – they’re actually really brilliantly designed…
I love these kinds of blanket statements – like there’s this great consensus that the battery case is awful, ugly or poorly designed because a few bloggers don’t like it. I already picked one of these up because it feels really nice in the hand, much nicer than the plastic battery cases that are out there, and although it has the battery bulge on the back, the rest of the case is thin so it doesn’t make your phone feel as large as the other battery cases do. I also like the integration with ios and the fact that you can charge with a lightening connector rather than a micro usb. Its also easy to put on and take off and its one piece so there’s less of a chance of losing the bottom piece (which I’ve done with the other types of battery cases).
The speaker was fantastic, I still have mine and it still sounds fantastic!
The battery case is unusual, I don’t think it’s ugly.
The bags aren’t terrible, but I’m surprised that environmentally-friendly Apple still use plastic bags instead of paper.
The only thing I agree with is the cables.
I’m still using an Apple Store bag from 2004…
First of all LUKE the plastic bag is not an accessory, the Hi-Fi speaker was and is one of the best speakers ever made I still have mine and works great, how many speakers you have that have lasted 10 years? Who reads your post before posting? Gosh!!!
the hifi speaker was great sound quality wise but the backless dock was a terrible idea. mine broke about a month after i had it because someone put an ipod in there without the dock adapter and then it got knocked – not even hard i may add, snaping the connectors internally. with no way to get it repaired that was over 200 quid down the drain. EDIT: changed good to great because frankly it was great sound quality.
As you can tell from the posts LUKE you are the only one picking on the speakers and the bags. Maybe try working for Dushmodo.
You are alone in most of these.
I’m almost tempted to buy the battery just because of all the flak that people are giving it. Have you ever seen a Chihuahua? They are so ugly that are cute. Although this is probably much different than the Chihuahua….. I’m sure the battery case will work well and feel good in my hands, even if it will piss off all of you haters. Great conversational piece
I’ll agree on everything esp the Apple bag. When you have something heavy, say a MacBook in there, the only way to carry is with the cord around your wrist and it tends to cut into skin and cutoff circulation.
Apple used to be “i’ts n Apple it just works”. I’m sorry, now – “Its an Apple, it’s just crap” Designs that have passed there useby date and operating systems that don’t work very efficiently. Every new OSX update brings more pain for it user. I am stating to think, Apple has had it day in the Sunshine, now its going down.
That Apple bag is so ugly that if I ever decide to commit suicide via suffocation, I’d look for a different bag.
