We already know that, as is usual for incremental iPhone “s” releases, the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus won’t differ too much from the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus in terms of external design.
However, according to some new CAD design renders from the usually-reliable @OnLeaks, the next-generation iPhone is set to be a little thicker than the current model handsets.
The iPhone 6s will measure 7.1mm thick — 0.2mm thicker than the iPhone 6 — while the iPhone 6s Plus will be 7.mm thick, compared to the 7.1mm iPhone 6 Plus.
While people will likely jump to claim this is to avoid another “bendgate” incident like last year, more likely is the fact that Apple is having to make the iPhone slightly thicker to accommodate the bevy of improvements this year’s model will boast — making it the biggest “s” release Apple has ever made.
Of course, there’s no guarantee this is accurate, although this isn’t the first time we’ve heard similar reports. The images are said to be from the designs Apple sends out to a select few accessory-makers to allow them to build the necessary cases, docks and other accessories to hit shelves around the same time the new iPhone does.
Would a thicker iPhone put you off? Is this another example of non-Steve Jobs focus on design, as with last year’s protruding camera lens? Whatever your thoughts, leave them in the comments box below.

A thicker 6 but a thinner 6Plus? Good thing I’m firmly in the 6Plus camp.
It looks like they missed a number, other reports show the 6s Plus will be 7.3mm vs the current 7.1mm of the 6 Plus.
I’d move up to a Plus, but realised it wouldn’t fit in any of my shorts pockets over the summer! I wouldn’t mind a thicker 6S or whatever, as long as it wasn’t so dang slippery.
Either way, I keep my phones about 3 generations, so talk to me when the 8 is introduced. ;-)
That slipperiness is one reason many of us would like to see the colorful carbonate shell offerings brought up the iPhone line. It won’t happen, but it would be good.
The iPad Air is too slippery too; the metal is cold to the touch, and the center of gravity is such that it leads to falling out of one’s hand.
Let’s just hope they finally overrode Jony Ive’s obsession with thinness over battery performance. I’ll happily accept an additional 3% in thickness if it means I’ll get an improvement in battery life.
I’d take up to 10% across all the i-devices –especially if it meant larger battery and longer battery life–and more RAM. Add in better break protection and no need for a case and we’re sold!
Folks… 0.2mm is literally the thickness of two sheets of standard white printer paper. Nothing to see here.
Jim, literally!
