Having missed its traditional annual refresh date back in June, we’ve been anticipating Apple’s iPhone 5 ever since. It has been widely rumored that the device will finally be unveiled at some point this month, but according to one report, we’ll hear nothing from the Cupertino company until early October.

October 4 to be precise, according to AllThingsD, who cites sources “close to the situation.” However, this may not come as a surprise to many of you who have been keeping a close eye on the latest news surrounding the iPhone 5, with Apple still yet to issue any invites to its upcoming press event.

During its unveiling on October 4, Apple is expected to announce that the iPhone 5 will be available “within a few weeks,” which would point to a mid-October launch. Although the company was expected to announce the device this month, a mid-October launch date has been a common expectation in recent rumors.

AllThingsD also notes that the event won’t just be special because of the iPhone 5 announcement, but also because it will be newly appointed CEO Tim Cook’s first major product announcement for the company.

Is it October 4 yet?

  2. Kieseltom says:

This is getting old…as is my 3GS waiting for the announcement.  If this is nothing more than a refreshed 4, I’m not going to be too happy.

  3. Matt Ralston says:

Nice photo, AllThingsD. Hmm…. what can we do with this picture of Tim Cook holding his hand up? I know… lets ‘shop in a fake iPhone 5. Presumably the new model comes with double-sided sticky tape.

  4. theonlycog says:

has he glued that phone to his hand!

  5. FriarNurgle says:

    Better get in line now.

He is holding it wrong !

  7. KillianBell says:

Me neither. Apple needs to make some big improvements if they want to lock me into another two-year contract. And if they don’t, I think I’ll be grabbing the Samsung Galaxy S II for a year.

Welcome to IOS 5. Brought to you by Android.

  9. Bob says:

It’s not Apple locking you into “another two-year contract” it’s your cellular company in order for you to get the iPhone at the discounted price.

  10. Thunder Dan says:

Yeh, I’m starting to get ticked off. Release it already!

  11. jennygotagun says:

meh.. i can’t afford it anyway..

  12. Bunnytrifecta says:

Really Apple? Rumor had it being announced in September, now it’s “supposed” to be October, then it will be November, then December, then January, then February… I’m sensing a trend here.

I love my iPhone 3GS, but would really like to upgrade. Hello? Hello?

  13. Biff says:

So American.  So spoiled.  Take a trip to Somalia and see if people there are “frustrated” by an unnecessary toy not being available.

  14. dwplay11 says:

Welcome to android, brought to you by iOS. See what I did there?

  15. Ed_Kel says:

Do some research. You’ll see that there are two iPhones in the works. One similar to the 4, presumed to be released in China along with Sprint and T-Mobile, and one with a significant redesign. If you read the articles here you may think that the 5 is a refresh because of leaked photos that look similar to the 4 but the leaked photos are either 4 prototypes from last year or the similar said upgrade, not the iPhone 5.

Don’t worry, the renders brought forth by 9 to 5 Mac and MacRumors with the wider screen and tear drop design along with the same material structure as the iPad 2 are becoming widely accepted as the most accurate iPhone 5 rendition yet. : )

  16. Ed_Kel says:

    Who cares about Somalia?

    Go plant a tree.

  17. AlecTheFirst says:

That’s the only way to get reception with the iPhone 5

  18. WillaNatch9876 says:

wooow unbelievable it I just got a 827.89 iPad2 for only 103.37 and my mom got a 1499.99 HTV for only 251.92, they are both coming tomorrow bu USPS. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prîces at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HTV to my boss for 600 that I only paid  78.24 for. I use http://jmb.tw/52bf

  19. Ed_Kel says:

Implying that I’m not a good person because I don’t care about Somalia?

You’re right, lets hold hands and smoke a joint, then ban this website because none of us deserve to indulge ourselves in “toys” because the people in Somalia can’t get their hands on an iPhone 5.

  20. Kieseltom says:

Oh…I’ve done all the research.  I’ve just seen enough rumors not come to fruition.  So I accept nothing until it comes from Apple.

  21. Bucky says:

We sent Americans to Somalia. They took food with them for the people. They got shot at, kidnapped and murdered.

So now we stay home and wait buy iPhones. Good luck Somalia.

  22. Gelos says:

What ever happened with the “good companies ship” concept?
I like Apple products and I am waiting to replace my 3G model for the new one, but come on!
I really cannot understand Apple’s failure to design, manufacture and ship their new iteration in over a year. This is simply not acceptable. The expectation is to simply develop a new product at least on a yearly basis.
    PERIOD

  24. alessandra wright says:

only speculations, i think it will be released in the second week of ocbober

  25. Ed_Kel says:

    point well made!

  26. Ed_Kel says:

I think the point he was trying to make is that the phone better be worth another 2-year contract otherwise he will find a different phone.

  27. Ed_Kel says:

    You don’t make any sense..

The iPhone 4 is still dominating the market. Do you really think Apple NEEDS to ship a new iPhone at all right now? We’re lucky they have a new phone coming out this quick. What makes Apple superior is that they don’t ship junk. With that said, I’m sure they are in no rush throughout their design process and will only release a good quality product, regardless of how long it takes.

Maybe you should go buy an HTC where they release a new EVO every month. Still believe in the “good companies ship” concept?

  28. Ed_Kel says:

What trend are you sensing? That the rumors are off? We haven’t heard anything from Apple…

  29. second that says:

you’re a smart guy, ed! love your responses

  30. jacklahaie says:

It’s not Apple who’s jerking us around on release, it’s the bloggers (no offense, guys ;) ) with very imprecise sources. I admit that I’m anxious to have a replacement, too, but I’d rather them take the extra time needed to make things perfect than to rush the launch in order to meet some sort of traditional expectation. I’ve seen things turn out horrible because the developers simply weren’t given enough time. If it’s true that we’re getting TWO phones, then really, we’re getting more by simply waiting a few extra months.

  31. Adamsjb 826 says:

I’ve been to Somalia.  They have unlocked iPhones there that were bought from Americans here.  If only they would learn to grow crops and read…

  32. prof_peabody says:

Kind of ironic how you reply to an accusation of being spoiled self-centred Americans by acting like … spoiled self-centred Americans.

  33. Cold_dead_fingers says:

I don’t completely agree with Ed but I do to a degree. You chose to wait for the iPhone 5. You may find it to be the best value, which makes sense but Apple does what’s best for the company, not best for your convenience. I don’t think it took this long on purpose. I think Apple is radically changing the iPhone and that’s the source of the skew from the yearly release.

Look for those sexy specs in October

  34. Ed_Kel says:

    And proud!

I work my ass off day in and day out for the things I want and I don’t owe you or anyone else anything; That’s what being an American is all about. It’s my money and if I decide to spoil myself with a new iPhone or like this past Sunday, 2 iPads for my wife and I, I will!

With that said, I assume you’re British with the way you spell “self-centred” so what makes you think you even have the right to speak that way about Americans?

    Fuck off Prof. dick.
