Martin Scorsese’s historical crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon has been the most popular movie since it hit the Apple TV+ streaming service in mid January, according to a market analysis.
The fact that the film earned ten Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, surely helps.
Killers of the Flower Moon pulls in a big audience
Killers of the Flower Moon tells the true story of a man who sets out to get control of Oklahoma’s oil riches through a series of murders of Osage Native Americans.
It’s the creation of Martin Scorsese, who has a long and illustrious career directing such classics as Taxi Driver and Goodfellas. His list of awards is lengthy, including an Oscar, three Golden Globes and three Emmys. And he may earn more accolades, considering his latest is up for so many Oscars, SAG awards and more.
It reached theaters in October, and Apple TV+ subscribers have been able to watch since January 12. And plenty of them are availing themselves of the opportunity.
It was No. 1 on ReelGood’s list of Top 10 Movies on streaming during the week of January 18 through January 24. The same was true the week before.
Rival rating service JustWatch ranks the film slightly lower, saying it’s the second most popular movie on any streaming service during the weeks from January 15 through January 28, only beat out by The Holdovers. Whichever is right, the Apple TV+ movie is certainly drawing a larger audience than almost any other movie on streaming.
Estimates of viewership from JustWatch and ReelGood are necessary because Apple and other streaming services don’t reveal how many people tune into their films or series.
