Martin Scorsese’s historical drama Killers of the Flower Moon will debut in theaters in late October. The real-life tale of a serial killer will appear on the Apple TV+ streaming service sometime after that.

The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro, and Apple is clearly hoping it will earn an Oscar or two.

Killers of the Flower Moon offers actors and a director at their best

Martin Scorsese has a a long and illustrious career, directing such classics as Taxi Driver and Goodfellas. His list of awards is lengthy, including an Oscar, three Golden Globes and three Emmys.

His latest project is Killers of the Flower Moon, which tells the true story of a man who sets out to get control of Oklahoma’s oil riches through a series of murders of Osage Native Americans.

Here’s how Apple TV+ describes the upcoming movie:

“At the turn of the 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight. The wealth of these Native Americans immediately attracted white interlopers, who manipulated, extorted and stole as much Osage money as they could before resorting to murder.

“Based on a true story and told through the improbable romance of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), “Killers of the Flower Moon” is an epic western crime saga, where real love crosses paths with unspeakable betrayal. Also starring Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons, “Killers of the Flower Moon” is directed by Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese from a screenplay by Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese, based on David Grann’s bestselling book.”

Early accolades

The movie was first shown at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, where it received “broad critical acclaim and an extended standing ovation,” according to Apple.

Reviews based on that showing are very positive. It has a 97% approval rating on the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.

In theaters this fall

To be eligible for an Oscar, Killers of the Flower Moon must be shown in theaters. Apple partnered with Paramount Pictures to handle the theatrical release.

The first opportunity to see it on the silver screen will be Friday, October 20, 2023. Following the global theatrical run, the film will debut on Apple TV+.
