Samsung showed off three transparent microLED displays at its First Look event Sunday just ahead of CES 2024 in Las Vegas, according to reports. Two of them are tinted, but the totally clear one can have an especially hologram-like effect.

Don’t get too excited, though. With no availability or pricing information available yet, it might be a while before even any rich people you know can buy these.

“Transparent LEDs are poised to redefine viewing experiences, making the line between content and reality virtually indistinguishable,” Samsung said when it released a video demo of one of the displays, below.

While two of the displays feature tinted glass to make them easier to see as objects — none of the three panels has frames, and the screens are thin and free-standing — the perfectly clear version makes the content shown look hologram-like, as if floating in mid-air, Engadget reported.

And other folks posted some quick video looks at the screens, as in the post below. Samsung displayed the new screens along with transparent OLED and LCD panels to show transparent microLED’s greater brightness.

Here’s more from Samsung about the transparent version:

Combining superior craftsmanship with six years of tireless research and development, this new modular MICRO LED wowed attendees with its futuristic design. The Transparent MICRO LED’s crystal-clear, glass-like display has revolutionized the viewing experience and attracted the attention of global consumers.

No availability or pricing information

We don’t know much about the displays beyond their transparency. Samsung has offered no availalbility or pricing information, so it seems unlikely they’ll go on sale anytime soon.

But when they do, look for (very) high price tags. Samsung sells some monstrously large microLED screens for TVs that cost in the $100,000 range, even up to $110,000 for a 110-inch model called “The Wall.”

As for products you can actually buy, Samsung is also showcasing updated OLED TVs and soundbars at CES 2024.
