The darkly comedic spy thriller series Slow Horses has three seasons ready to binge-watch on Apple TV+ — season 3’s finale aired last week — plus season 4 on the way and now a fifth season planned for production, the streaming service said Tuesday.

The critically acclaimed hit show starring Gary Oldman might as well keep rolling, as there are more novels in Mick Herron’s Slough House book series to base new six-episode seasons on.

With Slow Horses season 3 just finished, Apple TV+ looks ahead to season 5

Apple TV+ said a fifth season will air of celebrated spy drama Slow Horses, a bonafide streaming hit nominated for five BAFTA Awards and starring Academy Award winner Gary Oldman. He also recently got a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal on the show of irascible Jackson Lamb, section head of MI5’s remedial Slough House for screw-up agents (who somehow keep getting mixed up in major cases, often conspiracy-based).

“Since its premiere in 2022, Slow Horses has been celebrated as ‘undoubtedly the best spy series on television’; a ‘forceful, funny, and conspiratorial’ series featuring ‘excellent writing and performances’ that is just ‘so damn good,'” Apple TV+ said. “All three seasons of Slow Horses hold a Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, as the series continues to receive global accolades from critics and fans alike.”

What’s ahead in season 5?

In addition to the third season, based on Herron’s third novel in the Slough House series, Real Tigers, Apple TV+ previously announced a fourth season based on the fourth novel in the series, Spook Street.

Here’s how the streaming service describes the upcoming season and the show in general, based on Herron’s London Rules, in case you have yet to partake of the show:

In season five of Slow Horses, everyone is suspicious when resident tech nerd Roddy Ho has a glamorous new girlfriend, but when a series of increasingly bizarre events occur across the city, it falls to the Slow Horses to work out how everything is connected. After all, Lamb knows that in the world of espionage, “London Rules” should always apply.

Slow Horses is a darkly humorous espionage drama that follows a dysfunctional team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5 known unaffectionately as Slough House. Oldman stars as Lamb, the brilliant but cantankerous leader of the spies, who end up in Slough House due to their career-ending mistakes as they frequently find themselves blundering around the smoke and mirrors of the espionage world.

Stellar cast

In addition to Oldman, the cast includes Academy Award nominee Kristin Scott Thomas, BAFTA Scotland Award winner Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Rosalind Eleazar, Christopher Chung, Samuel West, Sophie Okonedo, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Kadiff Kirwan and Oscar nominee Jonathan Pryce.

See-Saw Films produces the series for Apple TV+. Will Smith adapted it for television. Will Smith, Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Douglas Urbanski, Gail Mutrux, Julian Stevens and Graham Yost serve as executive producers. Apple TV+ has not said who will direct season 5.
