Apple TV+ dropped a trailer Wednesday for it upcoming Irish dramedy Flora and Son, saying “never underestimate a Dublin woman with a guitar.”

Bad Sisters mainstay Eve Hewson stars as that Dublin woman, a beleaguered mom trying to give her rebellious teen son a focus in life through a beat-up old acoustic guitar.

The film debuts in theaters September 22 and streams on Apple TV+ September 29.

Can a crappy guitar save Dubliners Flora and Son?

The trailer sets a familiar stage. A young single mom lives with her teenage son, who, to say the least, is not her biggest fan. The dad seems to be barely in the picture.

At some point a cop gives Flora advice. She better give the kid something constructive to do before he ends up in jail. That something is a well-worn acoustic guitar. And if you think that works like a charm from the get-go, guess again.

Here’s how Apple TV+ described Flora and Son‘s plot:

Single mom Flora (Eve Hewson) is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, Flora tries to occupy him with a beat-up acoustic guitar. With the help of a washed-up LA musician (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Flora and Max discover the transformative power of music. From the musical mind of John Carney, Flora and Son explores the bond between a mother and son on a journey toward a new harmony.

The description sounds a bit trite, but the trailer has enough amusing bits to recommend the film. It comes from writer-director John Carney, who also did Sing Street, set in 1980s Dublin.
