Even though the iPhone 15 has not yet debuted, rumors about the 2024 lineup have already started popping up. A new leak claims iPhone 16 will have an iPhone 12-like rear design.

The entry-level iPhone 16 could have its rear cameras arranged vertically. Apple switched to a diagonal layout for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14’s cameras.

iPhone 16 could mark the return of vertical rear cameras

This year’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are rumored to stick to the same diagonal layout. But for its 2024 iPhone, Apple seemingly plans to go back to an iPhone 12-inspired design for the rear. The front should look different, with the Dynamic Island instead of a notch, and thinner bezels.

With the iPhone 16 series more than 1.5 years from launch, a lot could change before that. These devices are in the early stage of development, and Apple could make many changes.

It is unclear why Apple is planning to swap the camera layout on its 2024 iPhones.

iPhone 16 Pro could pack big displays

Analysts Ross Young (of Display Supply Chain Consultants) and Ming-Chi Kuo (TF International Securities) both think Apple will bump up the screen size of the iPhone 16 Pro lineup. The iPhone 16 Pro Max could get a seriously big 6.9-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro might feature a 6.2x-inch panel. However, the bigger screen sizes are not expected to carry over to the non-Pro 2024 iPhones.

There are also rumors of Apple shrinking the notch for its 2024 iPhones and introducing under-display Face ID. But given these phones are still under development, there’s no confirmation if they will indeed ship with such features.

But before the iPhone 16 next year, Apple is gearing up to launch the iPhone 15 series in September 2023. Among other changes, upcoming iPhones likely will ditch Lightning in favor of USB-C.
