A tvOS 16.3.1 update is out for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD. There’s also an equivalent update for HomePod smart speakers.

These bring general improvements, not new features, but are nevertheless recommended for users of the Apple entertainment devices.

tvOS 16.3.1

Apple TV users can now install tvOS 16.3.1. Monday’s update comes just a couple weeks after the release of tvOS 16.3, and the small bump in the version number is a warning to not expect new features.

Apple’s release notes say merely, “This update includes general performance and stability improvements.”

An Apple TV will eventually automatically update itself. But those eager to get the tvOS 16.3.1 update immediately can do so by navigating to the Settings app on Apple TV. Then click through to System, then click on Software Updates, then click on Update Software.

HomePod 16.3.1

All three versions of HomePod actually run a heavily modified version of tvOS. Whenever new software for the settop box launches, Apple’s smart speakers get their own update. Today is no exception.

The release notes for the new version say only “Software version 16.3.1 includes general performance and stability improvements.”

The tweak comes just two weeks after the last HomePod software update, which was fairly major. Read Cult of Mac‘s guide to installing new HomePod software updates for help.
