Taking the top film prize at Saturday’s Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards puts Apple TV+ drama CODA in good stead to win the Best Picture prize at the upcoming Academy Awards. The prize the movie took has been a major predictor of Best Picture winners for decades.

Along with CODA’s win at the PGA Awards, the hit Apple TV+ comedy series Ted Lasso took home a prize.

PGA Awards for Apple TV+: CODA and Ted Lasso

The 33rd annual PGA Awards on Saturday saw prizes handed to producers of CODA and Ted Lasso. Apple TV+ had also received nominations for the drama series The Morning Show and the film Come From Away.

CODA won the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures at the ceremony. The historic win marks the first time a film from a streaming service has won the award.

“It’s incredible,” said CODA producer Philippe Rousselet as he accepted the award with fellow producers. “It really means so much coming from our peers. I think we will all agree a good movie always starts with a good story and in a world where we see the lack [of humanity] every day, I’ll take this award as a sign that there is still hope.”

Odds of a Best Picture win just went up

CODA‘s win could mean big things for the film at Sunday’s Oscars. With its similar preferential voting system to the Oscars, the PGA Awards tend to be a good indicator of success in the Academy Awards’ Best Picture category.

How good an indicator? The PGA’s Zanuck award winner has taken the Best Picture Oscar 22 times in the last 32 years. Since 2009, when both awards shifted to preferential voting systems, the awards failed to match just three times.

CODA received three of the six AppleTV+ Oscar nominations the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced in February. In addition to Best Picture, the film’s nominations include Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Troy Kotsur) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Sian Heder).

Ted Lasso wins yet another award

The other PGA AppleTV+ award winner was Ted Lasso. It earned the Danny Thomas Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television – Comedy for its second season.

Ted Lasso recently gained four wins at the Critics Choice Awards on March 13, adding to its impressive and growing award collection.

Apple TV+ is available by subscription for $4.99 a month.
