Apple is developing a more impressive version of its new Studio Display that will boast a mini-LED screen and ProMotion technology, according to one analyst. “Studio Display Pro” is reportedly set to make its debut this June.

There is some bad news for iMac fans, however. The rumored iMac Pro upgrade Apple was said to be planning for 2022 may not come at all now that the new Mac Studio and Studio Display have landed.

iMac Pro won’t make a comeback in 2022

We’ve all been waiting for a larger iMac powered by Apple silicon, but it is looking less and less likely we’ll actually get it. Cupertino discontinued the previous 27-inch model on Tuesday, and it may not get replaced after all.

Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), who has proven incredibly reliable in the past, on Thursday adjusted his predictions regarding Apple’s plans for the Mac in 2022.

Young now believes that Apple will launch a more impressive 27-inch “Studio Display Pro” to accompany Mac Studio and the next-generation Mac Pro — instead of a larger iMac or iMac Pro.

‘Studio Display Pro’ could land this June

“Still expecting a 27” MiniLED display from Apple in June,” Young tweeted Thursday. “Guess it might be a Studio Display Pro … Have confirmed it with multiple companies in their supply chain.”

Young believes production has already started on the new screen, which is expected to make its debut in June — alongside a new Mac Pro. So, what exactly happened to the rumored iMac Pro refresh?

“Our contacts weren’t aware of the separation of the iMac into Mac Studio + Studio Display, especially since there is a processor and camera in the Studio Display,” Young explained.

In other words, Apple may not have been developing a larger iMac with Apple silicon at all — it just looked like it was to sources in its supply chain because the Studio Display packs its own chipset.

The death of Pro Display XDR?

It’s not yet clear what this means for Pro Display XDR, but its days could be numbered. Young suggests Studio Display Pro could replace Apple’s most expensive screen with even more impressive specifications.

“The new MiniLED monitor will have around 2X as many MiniLED zones and >7X more LEDs,” he added. “Not sure of exact resolution. Will see if I can find out.”

If you were planning to buy a Studio Display, then, you might want to hold onto your cash and see what Apple has planned in the coming months.
