Apple is reportedly working on a new class of desktop computers. The Mac Studio supposedly will slot in between the Mac mini and Mac Pro.

In addition, an Apple Studio Display is also allegedly in development. It’s an upgrade to the Pro Display XDR.

Beef up Mac mini to get Mac Studio

There are reportedly two versions of the upcoming desktop Mac on the drawing board. “One features the M1 Max chip (the same as the 2021 MacBook Pro) and the other a variant of the Apple Silicon chip that is even more powerful than the current M1 Max,” according to 9to5Mac.

As noted, the Mac Studio will become a midrange desktop, between the Mac Pro and the Mac mini. Bloomberg said in 2021 that a “revamped, smaller Mac Pro” is in development. It’s possible that leak actually referred to the Mac Studio.

At the same time, the Mac mini is allegedly getting physically smaller. It would remain the entry-level desktop in Apple’s revamped product lineup.

As for the timing of the release, 9to5Mac speculates that “perhaps the new Mac Studio is only a few months away from its official announcement.”

7K Apple Studio Display

“Studio” is apparently the word of the day, as 9to5Mac also reports being told by an unnamed source that an Apple Studio Display in on the way.

This will supposedly boast a 7K resolution, beating Apple’s current high-end 6K external monitor. That said, “It’s unclear whether the new Apple Studio Display is a replacement for the Pro Display XDR or a new option in the lineup with distinct features,” according to 9to5Mac.

A separate report from earlier in 2022 indicated that Apple is working on developing a number of new desktop displays, including a replacement for the Pro Display XDR. Also allegedly in the lineup is a screen that will cost around $2,500 — half the price of Pro Display XDR.
