Popular audio gear maker Rode just launched the affordable AI-Micro, a compact, dual-channel interface for recording to a mobile device or computer. Using the small gadget, one or two mini microphones, headphones and a choice of apps, your iPhone, iPad or MacBook becomes a mobile audio recording studio.

Rode gear often comes up in Cult of Mac‘s Setups coverage, especially when podcasting is the subject. That equipment is usually more of the desktop variety. The Rode AI-Micro looks like an ideal part of a rig for on-the-go recording. Have USB-C port, will travel!

The company said it intends the AI-Micro for mobile journalists and content creators like podcasters. The unit features two auto-sensing inputs for connecting 3.5mm microphones, a high-power headphone output, and a universal USB output for use with a variety of devices across operating systems.

The AI-Micro features two microphone inputs with high-quality preamps. It can record high-resolution 24-bit/48kHz audio. Auto-sensing inputs detect whether a TRS or TRRS microphone is connected and automatically adapt to accommodate, with no adaptors needed.

And when you only need one microphone, one of the inputs can sense that and configure as a single stereo TRS input.

The device also features a high-powered headphone output for zero-latency audio monitoring and playback.

Rode designed the AI-Micro to connect to smartphones, tablets and computers via its universal USB output. That helps make it plug-and-play compatible with iOS, macOS, Windows and Android devices. It comes with USB-A, USB-C and Lightning cables.

Compact and light, the AI-Micro weighs less than 20 grams.

You can use the AI-Micro with the Rode app suite, including Rode Central and Rode Reporter. That lets you access expanded features and functionality, on-the-go configuration and recording on any device.

The interface is compatible with Rode Connect, the Australia-based company’s free podcasting and streaming software for Mac and Windows.
