Back in the day, it took more than a year — from September 1996 to October 1997 — for fans of Crash Bandicoot to get a second dose of action with the game’s sequel.

Jump forward to 2021 and fans of Crash Bandicoot: On the Run who have completed the game, launched on iOS in March, can already get a second fix of Crash action courtesy of the title’s first big update.

Somewhat clumsily titled Crash Bandicoot: On the Run Season 2: Running Outta Time, this update brings a new Dino Might survival run, new bosses, additional skins and more. Here’s what the release notes promise:

– Introducing Season 2: Running Outta Time! New rewards, new bosses, 19 new time-themed skins to collect
– Avoid the Noid! We’re starting off the Seasonal Gangs with N-Tropy, Fake Coco, Tiny Tiger, and The Noid
– New Survival Run: Dino Might
– Unlock the Beach Jungle and all its secrets!
– “Dizzy” feature now only applies to crates and side collisions
– Fixes, optimizations, and improvements!

’90s icon turns endless runner

Crash Bandicoot isn’t the first classic video game mascot to be reimagined as an endless runner for mobile. Nintendo’s Super Mario Run laid the groundwork and showed that this is a good way of translating console faves to the smaller displays of mobile devices.

Other than this change, however, I’ve so far found that Crash Bandicoot: On the Run feels refreshingly similar to the Crash games I spent hours playing in the 1990s.

Updates like this new one suggest that developer King is keen to keep Crash Bandicoot: On the Run fresh. That formula worked very well for Mario Kart Tour, which continues to make money long after its initial release. It’s too early to say whether Crash Bandicoot: On the Run will follow that example long-term. For now, though, it seems that gamers have plenty more to enjoy about the title.

Crash Bandicoot: On the Run Season 2: Running Outta Time is a free download on iPhone and iPad. It’s available now in the App Store. In-app purchases are available.
