Apple may be on the verge of showing off new AirPods and a third-gen Apple Pencil, claims a tipster on Chinese social media platform Weibo.
An image, posted by user UnclePan, shows what they claim are the next-gen AirPods, along with text claiming that Apple is currently gearing up to show off the Apple Pencil.
Because this is from a largely unproven source, take it with a pinch of salt. The user recently shared some images of what they claim are upcoming iPhone 12 cases from Apple. In all cases, there’s no way of ascertaining accuracy because the products have yet to debut. Even if they are accurate, it’s also worth noting that there’s no guarantee that these will debut at next week’s April 20 event.
New Apple Pencil, AirPods?
Whether new AirPods will make an appearance at Apple’s first media event of 2021 has been highly contested. In late 2020, reports from the respected likes of Bloomberg said that they were likely to appear in the first half of 2021. But more recent reports have contradicted this. Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities said last month that the new AirPods won’t go into production until Q3 2021. Leaker Jon Prosser has also said they’re not on the cards imminently. The new AirPods will supposedly boast an AirPods Pro-style design but lack active noise cancellation.
As for the Apple Pencil, not too much has been heard about it. The first-gen Apple Pencil debuted in September 2015, while the second arrived in October 2018. Based on those two-yearly intervals, it would make sense for another to arrive in 2021. Both previous Apple Pencils have been announced alongside new iterations of the iPad Pro, the latest upgrade of which is expected next week. A previous report suggested the next Apple Pencil will be available in black or white color options.
