TikTok topped the App Store charts for another month as the top non-gaming app worldwide. Across both iOS and Android, the popular video-sharing app racked up more than 58 million installs.
The No. 1 audience for TikTok is China, where the app is called Douyin. China accounted for 11% of downloads, followed by the United States with 10%.
YouTube came in second place last month, followed by the usual suspects of Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook. Zoom managed sixth place, remaining extremely popular, despite the world starting to open up again slightly as the COVID-19 vaccine rolls out.
TikTok’s dominance of the App Store
TikTok’s stranglehold on the App Store has been quite something to behold. In 2020, it ranked No. 1 in the App Store for eight months out of 12. Its lowest-ranking month was January 2020, when it came in at No. 6. However, from April 2020 it remained in the top spot pretty consistently. The only month this changed was in August, when it was briefly overtaken again by YouTube. In other words, TikTok’s March performance marks one year since which it pretty much came to dominate the App Store.
TikTok’s rise came at a particularly successful point for the App Store. Last year, the App Store experienced a massive boom in sales as people were stuck home during the pandemic. According to a recent report, during the first quarter of 2021 customers spent a massive $32 billion across iOS and Android. That marked a 40% increase from the same period last year — and the biggest quarter on record.
TikTok currently has around 689 million users worldwide. It has been downloaded more than 2 billion times on both the App Store and Google Play. In the United States, 62% of users are aged between 10 and 29.
