Paired HomePod mini setup draws cable-management flak
A setup with a nice desk and paired HomePod mini speakers drew some cable-management flak.

On social media, crowing about the beautiful computer setup you finally finished putting together can be a risky gambit. Because, you know, people. They might just gleefully and repeatedly point out small flaws in your masterpiece as if they’re the main thing. Picky, picky, picky.

A recent victim of this minor crime would be Aaron Bielert, network president and founder of SparkkTV, who posted about finishing up work on a multi-level desk setup centered on a Mac mini with a 21.5-inch LG UltraFine 4K Display perched on a stylish Twelve South Curve Riser. Paired HomePod mini speakers mounted on the wall flank the desk, providing the audio.

“macOS 11.3 Beta supports paired HomePods & I’m loving it,” Bielert enthused in the detailed gear list they thoughtfully included in the post, just like the Reddit bot nags everyone to do.

But all some people could see? The cables.

Cable management comments

At least three comments focused on cable management. One person said the cables “ruined” the whole post. Another recommended that Bielert spend 30 minutes on the task to save the setup, suggesting raceways be used to hide some of the wires.

Bielert replied he had tried raceways, but they looked worse than the clips securing the speaker wires in the photo.

In a subsequent reply, he said they installed D-Line PVC raceways on the wires under the HomePod mini speakers, and it looked good. But the cords visible under the desk were still an issue. So no new picture is posted for hyper-critical analysis — yet.

“Will put an updated picture up later,” he wrote. “Still going to velcro the bottom wires before I do another picture.”

Since then, Bielert updated the post with a new photo showing better cable management. In his updated photo, below, the cable hiders under the HomePod minis are 5/8-inch D-Line Raceways he found at Menards.

Cool desk you probably won’t find

Naturally, not all the comments concerned cables. And several were complimentary.

One even took a stand against the cable-management cops: “Great setup OP! Can’t believe how much people are obsessing over a few cables lol.”

Another comment praised the desk highly, asking what it was. Bielert said it’s a Realspace Brent Dog-Leg Desk from OfficeMax that appears to be made no longer. It’s “currently unavailable” at the Amazon link below, too, by the way.

“It’s the best desk I’ve ever had,” he said.

Too bad about all those cables near it, though.
