Apple TV+ has picked up its first Golden Globes win, rewarding Jason Sudeikis for his lead role in the excellent comedy series Ted Lasso.

Sudeikis won the award in a ceremony Sunday night. He received the award virtually from London. This is the first time Apple TV+ has won at the Golden Globes, although last year it received its first nominations for the series The Morning Show.

Sudeikis gave a somewhat disheveled, amusingly rambling speech, dressed in a hoodie made by his sister’s dance studio. “This is nuts,” he said, responding to the win.

After the show, Sudeikis did a Zoom Q&A with journalists from around the world. There’s not much revelatory there, although one of the more amusing interactions was a journalist from Variety. Asked what he can say about season two of the show, the star jokingly said that:

“Nothing. What a waste of a question … Of course I could [say what’s going to happen]. I know everything. But I’m not going to say a word. I’ll get sued by Apple. I don’t want that heat.”

Apple has yet to reveal hard numbers for Apple TV+. However, Ted Lasso seems to be one of the bigger hits for the streaming service. It has a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 98% and critic score of 90%.

Apple has already renewed the show for a second and third season. Season one is currently available to watch in its entirety on Apple TV+.

Ted Lasso wasn’t the only Apple TV+ show to receive Golden Globes awards. Apple’s excellent Wolfwalkers was nominated for Best Animated Film, but lost out to Pixar’s Soul. Meanwhile, Bill Murray was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Film for Sofia Coppola’s On the Rocks. However, he lost out to Daniel Kaluuya in Judas and the Black Messiah.

Apple has supposedly made winning awards a big part of its Apple TV+ strategy. While it didn’t totally triumph at the Golden Globes this year, however, Apple certainly must be happy with Ted Lasso‘s big win. If the second and third seasons are as good as the first, this could be the first of many similar prizes.
