Apple Clips 3.0, released on Wednesday, includes an improved user interface to make it easier to record video and then add effects to it. There are enhancements for both iPhone and iPad users.

This free software helps users combine video clips, photos and music into fun videos. It’s aimed at producing eye-catching content for TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube and more.

Apple Clips might be the best video app you’ve never heard of

“Clips has become one of the most popular iOS video creation apps, and millions of projects are made every day with it,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s VP of Apps Product Marketing “Users love how easy it is to create fun, expressive videos for sharing with friends, family, and classmates with just a few taps on their iPhone or iPad screens.”

Clips 3.0 includes numerous tweaks. There’s a redesigned video record screen that floats on top of the viewer when shooting vertically or horizontally. And the update brings redesigned Effects, Media, and Projects browsers. There are new stickers, arrows and shapes to place on videos. And Apple added 25 new soundtracks that automatically adjust to match the length of videos.

iPad users benefit by Clips 3.0 too. Unlike the iPhone version, tablet users can use Clips in landscape orientation. And there’s support for external keyboards and mice.

The two versions aim at different audiences. Clips on iPhone automatically opens to a new 16:9 vertical project for social networking. The iPad version opens to a new 4:3 landscape project, the optimal size for full-screen videos on iPad, and a better option for YouTube.

iPhone 12 standard and Pro users can do HDR video capture and add more HDR photos and videos from their Photos library. Clips 3.0 will even share the final video automatically as a Dolby Vision HDR file.

Apple Clips 3.0 is available today as a free update on the App Store for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch running iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 or later.
