Apple TV+ has racked up 17 nominations for the 2020 Daytime Emmy awards. That’s more than established names including Hulu, HBO, and fellow tech newcomers like YouTube Originals and FaceBook Watch.

Kids’ series Ghostwriter got eight nominations. Preschool show Helpsters picked up five. Snoopy in Space and Peanuts in Space: Secrets of Apollo 10 also received their share of awards.

Emmy awards for Apple

Technically, of course, none of Apple TV+ is daytime programming since Apple TV+ is an on-demand streaming network that can be viewed at any time. In this case, however, it is rewarding family friendly content that could be screened during the day.

That explains why celebrated shows like The Morning Show and Defending Jacob are not featured among the nominees. Primetime Emmy awards — which would include those more adult-oriented shows — are typically handed out in mid-September.

Ghostwriter, a show about a group of kids who solve mysteries with the help of a ghost, premiered on Apple TV+ in November. It is nominated for eight awards including (deep breath) Outstanding Writing for a Children’s or Young Adult Program, Outstanding Directing, Outstanding Main Titles, Lighting, Cinematography, Sound Editing, Costume Design, and Special Effects.

Helpsters, meanwhile, is a Sesame Street-style show about learning to help. It was nominated for Outstanding Preschool Children’s Series, Outstanding Writing, Single Camera Editing, Costume Design, and Special Effects.

Snoopy in Space and Peanuts in Space: Secrets of Apollo 10 are nominated for Outstanding Short Format Children’s Program, Outstanding Special Class Short Format, Writing, and Single Camera Editing.

The importance of kids’ programming

It’s easy to forget about the kids’ shows on Apple TV+ if you’re out of the target demographic. But it’s a big selling point for a lot of people, as partly reflected through the massive success of Disney+. While Disney+ caters to older fans with its Star Wars and Marvel content, lots of parents also buy it for their kids to access the Disney libraries.

As I’ve argued before, if Apple can make Apple TV+ a “must have” for parents, that’s going to be significant in terms of subscriber figures. Currently, Apple TV+ has a reported 10 million monthly subscribers. However, this includes people currently getting a free year’s subscription for buying an Apple device.

The Daytime Emmy awards will reportedly air on CBS on Friday, June 26. Apple has reportedly assembled a team of awards specialists pushing for Emmy gold in 2020.
