Epic Games confirmed on Tuesday that it is extending Fortnite Battle Royale chapter two, season two into June. It promises fresh gameplay, new challenges, bonus XP, and a “couple more surprises” before season three.

Epic did not provide us with a reason for the extension, but there are a number of reasons why season three may not be ready yet.

This is the second successive season extension for Fortnite. Chapter two, season one ran from October 2019 all the way into February 2020 while Epic kept quiet about its reasons for the delay. Now it’s happening all over again.

“We’re extending Chapter 2 – Season 2 of Fortnite beyond the original April 30 date,” Epic confirmed on its blog. “Our plan is to launch Chapter 2 – Season 3 on June 4. Before then, there’s lots of content coming in the current Season.”

Fortnite faces another season delay

“We have multiple game updates on the way that will deliver fresh gameplay, new Challenges, bonus XP, and a couple more surprises up our sleeve!”

There is no explanation for the delay, but it’s likely the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is playing a big part in it. The Verge reports that Epic is currently maintaining Fortnite “from home,” which can’t be easy for a game this big.

We’ve also seen issues surrounding competitive Fortnite, which has been virtually non-existent since last summer’s hugely successful World Cup, in which the tournament winner was awarded $3 million.

Epic said in early March that it was pausing all cash prize tournaments to address performance concerns.

#RIPFortnite

The delay comes just days after the #RIPFortnite hashtag started trending on Twitter as fans of the game came together to criticize its current state. Many feel Fortnite has lost much of the appeal it boasted in the early days.

Others lashed out at Epic for not listening to the community with regards to things like skill-based matchmaking.

Whatever the reason for the delay may be, you can be sure chapter two, season three will bring more significant changes to Battle Royale. We’ll just have to wait longer to see what they might be.

The good news is that those who haven’t had a chance to play much this season now have more time to complete its Battle Pass.
