Apple Books offering free novels and audiobooks to get you through self-isolation

Apple is offering users in the U.S. (and hopefully elsewhere soon) a selection of free books and audiobooks to help while away the hours while in self-isolation.

A push notification Apple sent out Sunday advises customers to “enjoy a good book, on us.” It reads as follows:

“Explore free books, read-alongs for kids, cozy mysteries, and audiobooks for the whole family.”

The notification redirects to a Free Books page in the Apple Books Store. This page features a variety of novels and audiobooks in different genres. If, knowing how much free time you’re likely to have, you’re looking to get into a new series, the niftiest of these tabs might be the “First in a Series, Free” option.

So far, it appears that Apple’s free books offer is only available to customers in the U.S. It is possible that, in the coming days, it rolls out the offer elsewhere in the world, however. After all, everyone is going through this coronavirus-induced self-isolating together. (As paradoxical as that sounds.)

Free Apple Books: Following in Audible’s footsteps

Apple Books isn’t the first platform to offer free audiobooks. Last week, Audible started offering free audiobook stories for kids to “help them continue dreaming, learning, and just being kids.” Unlike Audible’s offer, though, Apple’s one covers books aimed at adults as well as kids.
