A new iOS app lets users simultaneously record video using multiple iPhone cameras. DoubleTake is created by the makers of popular camera app Filmic Pro.

In the words of the app’s makers, DoubleTake transforms your phone into a multi-cam studio — although you’ll need to be running an iPhone XR, XS, or iPhone 11 to be able to use it.

The app is very easy to use. Users start by selecting the cameras they want to capture footage from. They then choose to record at 24, 25, or 30 frames per second and set focus (including different focal point for each camera). Users can also choose how to view the camera inputs, with options such as picture-in-picture and split-screen. If you fancy yourself as the next Brian “split-screen” De Palma, you can even save your 50/50 split-screen masterpiece as a single video.

The one downside of the app is that it’s got a maximum quality of 1080p. That’s because 1080p video is the maximum resolution supported by the Apple API for multi-cam capture.

Nonetheless, this is a nifty tool that’s well worth checking out for anyone who does videography with their iPhones. The app’s makers say that similar functionality could come to the Filmic Pro app in future. That would be great, since Filmic Pro offers a lot more customization of camera settings. However, there’s no timeline on when this might happen.

DoubleTake can be downloaded from the App Store for free. What is your favored video-shooting app? Let us know in the comments below.
