TikTok was the most popular iOS app worldwide in Q4 2019, as measured by total number of downloads. In both the App Store and Google Play, TikTok downloads hit an all-time high of almost 220 million installs. On iOS alone, it racked up 42 million.

In the United States, TikTok ranked no. 2 after the newly launched Disney+.

Overall, the top 10 apps in the U.S. by downloads were:

1. Disney+
2. TikTok
3. YouTube
4. Gmail
5. Netflix
6. Facebook Messenger
7. Facebook
8. Amazon
9. Instagram
10. Spotify

Worldwide, the rankings are as follows:

1. TikTok
2. YouTube
3. Instagram
4. WhatsApp
5. Facebook
6. Messenger
7. Google Maps
8. Jianying Vlog
9. Disney+
10. Taobao

TikTok’s dominance shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Since launching in September 2016, the video-sharing app has rapidly shot to fame. It’s accumulated in excess of 1 billion users around the world. Many of these are in China and India, two of its biggest markets. However, as this list shows it’s also increasingly popular — especially among younger users — in the United States.

The fact that it has beaten out apps made or owned by Facebook, Amazon, Google and others is certainly impressive. But a list like this also favors newer apps. Sensor Tower, which compiled the report, does not take into account user usage of apps. Since tools like Facebook Messenger have been around for longer, there’s a good chance many users already have them.

Beyond TikTok: Which other games rocked the App Store in Q4?

The number one spot on the U.S. list, the Disney+ streaming service app, was a newcomer in Q4. After launching on November 12, Disney revealed that the app surpassed 10 million sign-ups within its first 24 hours.

The Sensor Tower report also names Call of Duty: Mobile as the most popular iOS game in terms of installs in Q4 2019. It surpassed 80 million downloads. That’s a massive 3x the total of the next top game, Mario Kart Tour.
