There’s a brand-new version of the Opera web browser aimed at gamers — and it’s out today on Mac in early access. Opera GX offers a unique set of tools designed to enhance your desktop gaming experience.

The browser lets you free up important resources that you need while gaming. It can also put your favorite Twitch streams right on top of your games, so you can watch while you play.

A Mac might not be the system of choice for most gamers, but a decent 14% of people use an Apple computer for gaming, Opera says. And a large number of them run into technical issues when they try to play.

Most of those problems are network-related, but more than a quarter run into RAM issues, and around 14% suffer CPU trouble. Opera GX was built specifically to alleviate all of this.

The browser can’t make your Mac hardware more powerful than it already is. But what it can do is minimize the impact it has on system performance so that greater resources are available when you’re gaming.

“The set of browser limiters, which includes a Network Bandwidth Limiter, as well as CPU and RAM Limiters, prevents the browser from becoming resource-hungry,” Opera explains.

“What this means in practice is that everyone’s machines are left with more resources for running games.”

And it’s up to you exactly what kind of power Opera GX has at its disposal. You decide how much bandwidth, CPU power, and RAM it can eat into to prevent it being a resource hog.

Opera GX packs some other gamer-friendly features, too. There’s a dedicated button for one-click access to Twitch. And you can enjoy streams and videos in a pop-out window above your games.

You will also find a customizable user interface, a built-in ad-blocker, and specially designed wallpapers.

Opera GX is in early access for now. That means it’s not quite perfect just yet, but you can try it out. Download it from the Opera website, where there’s also a version for your Windows PC.
