The iPhone XR is likely to be the most popular new iPhone this year, followed by the iPhone XS Plus, and, in last place, the iPhone XS. That’s according to highly respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo also noted that pre-orders for the Apple Watch Series 4, which in my view was the standout new product at last week’s Apple event, were “better than expected.”

In terms of numbers, Kuo thinks that iPhone shipments will grow slightly year-on-year to reach 75-80 million units in the remainder of 2018.

Apple typically doesn’t give a breakdown of how individual models of iPhone have sold. However, Kuo thinks that the iPhone XS will represent 10-15 percent of shipments for the rest of this year; the iPhone XS Max will be 25-30 percent of shipments, and the iPhone XR will represent 55 to 60 percent of shipments.

He describes iPhone XS pre-orders as slightly “lower than expected,” suggesting that most people are holding out for the iPhone XS Max or iPhone XR.

As for the Apple Watch Series 4, Kuo suggests that Apple will ship 18 million units in 2018. He thinks that this figure will increase if Apple can get regulatory clearance for its EKG feature in other markets like it has with the FDA (note: clearance is not the same thing as approval), this could help drive sales.
