Apple is offering a free book excerpt from Senator John McCain’s new political memoir, The Restless Waves, coming out on May 22.

The section, which is available through the Apple News app, is referred to as an Apple News exclusive. While it was not written exclusively by Apple, it nonetheless underlines how Apple is taking a renewed interest in news reportage and publishing.

The book excerpt includes a link to the pre-order page of iBooks. You can check it out inside the Apple News app.

Although it is available for customers in the U.S., it’s worth noting that it is not necessarily available to Apple customers everywhere due to the different territory publishing rights involved.

A renewed commitment to publishing

Apple recently showed a renewed commitment to publishing news media through its acquisition of Texture, a digital magazine service. Apple is planning to use this to give its Apple News app an overhaul by offering a large collection of magazines for a fixed monthly price — like an Apple Music for reading.

It’s not yet clear whether book excerpts for upcoming releases such as this will become a regular thing for Apple. Given the wide reach of iOS, it would certainly be a move a lot of publishers and authors would be pleased to see. Since Apple wants to overhaul iBooks, it could be great for Apple, too.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed for news of new exclusives in the future!
