The official YouTube app for iOS is getting a new dark theme. The theme makes YouTube easier on the eye — particularly at night — and could help improve battery life on your iPhone X.

iOS has always been a predominantly bright operating system, with suggestions of a system-wide dark theme yet to come to fruition. Developers have been adding their own dark modes, however — and YouTube is next in line.

YouTube debuts dark theme on iOS

Some YouTube fans, who have updated to version 13.01.4 of the iOS app, have discovered the option to enable a dark theme inside the settings menu. As its name suggests, it turns what was once a primarily white user interface primarily dark.

Not every user can see this option yet — it isn’t even available on Android right now — so it appears YouTube is testing it among a select few ahead of a wider rollout. We expect the dark theme to reach more people soon, assuming no issues are uncovered.

Dark mode is best on iPhone X

Having a dark theme can be particularly important on iPhone X. The handset’s new OLED display, unlike older LCD iPhone displays, requires less power when darker images are displayed. Avoiding white screens can help you make the most of your battery life.

This is the same reason why Apple Watch, which also uses an OLED screen, has a predominantly dark user interface. We’re hoping Apple will give iPhone X users a similar option in a future iOS update, but for now, that’s not possible.

Can you see YouTube’s new dark theme yet?
