CES 2018 bug Nothing says “we’re living in the future” quite like the ability to control household appliances using your smartwatch. Fortunately, that’s what you’ll be able to do with manufacturer Whirlpool’s Wi-Fi-connected ovens, washing machines and dryers from later this year.

Announced at CES 2018, the company’s Whirlpool app will work with Apple Watch from later in 2018, giving you the ability to control upwards of 20 smart Whirlpool appliances from your wrist.

Understandably, the functionality will vary according to the appliance in question, but could include everything from changing temperature settings on the oven to checking how long is left on a dryer cycle. This marks the first time that an appliance maker has made its connected products work with the Apple Watch. Previously they could be controlled via iPhone or iPad.

Users will also be able to control the 2018 appliances using voice commands for both Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Google Home assistant.

The Apple Watch update will roll out later this year.
