OS X Mavericks is Apple’s next major version of its desktop OS that has been in beta all summer, and today Apple announced that it’s ready to ship to the public. For the first time, Apple is offering the new OS X as a completely free downloaded in the Mac App Store, so there’s absolutely no reason for you to not get it.

You can find Mavericks in the App Store as a free upgrade. Apple’s website has detailed the software’s new features for months, and you can check out the “what’s new” page.

“Mavericks is an incredible release, which introduces significant new apps and features, while also improving the performance and battery life of your Mac,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “We want every Mac user to experience the latest features, the most advanced technologies, and the strongest security. We believe the best way to do this is to begin a new era of personal computing software where OS upgrades are free.”

Apple says that any Mac capable of running Mountain Lion can run Mavericks. The full list of spec requirements is available here.
